# From jewelry to industry, Legor 3D Metal Hub is at your service

Founded nearly half a century ago, Italian company [Legor](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/legor-group-s-p/) has built a strong reputation for itself in the production of precious and non-precious metal alloys, plating solutions, and powders. In more recent years, the company has also started to position itself as a strategic partner for metal additive manufacturing, working with binder jetting hardware suppliers to develop materials and launching its own service, the 3D Metal Hub. This production service is quickly becoming a key supplier of 3D printed metal parts for the luxury and jewelry markets, as well as medical and industrial sectors.

Legor’s 3D Metal Hub was born in 2022 in part out of a years-long [strategic partnership with HP](https://www.voxelmatters.com/legor-and-hp-collaborate-on-precious-metal-development/). Dedicated readers might remember that HP launched its metal AM solution, the Metal Jet S100, the same year. This is no coincidence, as the binder jet technology is a key production solution in Legor’s 3D Metal Hub, particularly for steel and titanium parts. 

Binder jetting, which enables scalable, complex metal 3D prints, uses a combination of fine metal powders and a selectively deposited adhesive binder to rapidly build green parts layer by layer. These parts are then cured, removed from the build tray, depowdered, and then sintered, resulting in dense metal components.

Legor has been leveraging its vast experience with metal materials to create specialty precious metal powders for binder jetting (as well as laser 3D technologies) with the primary aim of [disrupting the jewelry and luxury markets](https://www.voxelmatters.com/hp-collaboration-with-legor-scales-to-jewellery-production/). For these end users in particular, metal binder jetting offers a way to circumvent various steps associated with more traditional casting, including the production of a wax pattern, the combustion of said pattern, and the casting of molten metal. 

Instead, jewelry designs can be produced directly from a 3D model without the need for any supports and with minimal post processing. Moreover, binder jetting enables jewelry makers to exploit design freedom through the integration of complex geometries like hollow shapes, organic structures, and lattices. From a design workflow perspective, the technology is also well suited to transitioning from prototyping to scalable production at competitive costs. It’s also worth pointing out that Legor offers post processing as part of its 3D Metal Hub service through external collaborations and partners.

In the past few years, the application scope of the Legor’s 3D Metal Hub has grown to encompass other industries, like medical, automotive, sports, consumer goods, and more. Like the jewelry market, these industries only seek to benefit from the ability to directly produce design-optimized products from a broad range of metals.  

## 3D Metal Hub materials

Within the metal binder jetting market, Legor has become a leader in the development and supply of precious and non-precious metal powders. Today, it offers a diverse range of its own consumables, including silver, bronze, platinum, and gold. Additionally, as part of its 3D Metal Hub service, it also prints parts from steel alloys and titanium on HP’s Metal Jet platform, while precious metal parts are printed on other binder jet solutions.

According to the company, the steel alloys are its most consumed powders at the 3D Metal Hub, offering a combination of high resistance and precision for a broad range of applications. Precious metal silver is also a key draw, particularly for customers in the jewelry and luxury markets who are seeking to create elegant pieces. Gold, which is not advertised on Legor’s 3D Metal Hub materials page, is possible to print on request for research initiatives. Titanium is the newest addition to Legor’s service, a strong metal known for its biocompatible and lightweight properties with medical and industrial applications.    

Arguably the most notable precious metal in Legor’s material offering is its platinum alloy powder. Platinum has always presented challenges when it comes to traditional metal production methods due to its high melting point (~1900°C) and poor heat dissipation, which rapidly wear standard tools. Up until recently, the main solution to these problems was using very resistant (and thus very costly) tools. Now, however, metal binder jetting is opening up vast possibilities when it comes to platinum production. 

As the company explains: “Unlike traditional manufacturing techniques, 3D printing technology does not require physical manipulation of the metal, eliminating common difficulties associated with its processing and allowing for the direct creation of complex platinum designs that would otherwise be impossible or prohibitively expensive to produce using conventional methods.”

In other words, because binder jetting is effectively a direct, solid-state process, platinum pieces can be formed without the need to melt the precious metal and use tools to shape it. It’s a huge win for the jewelry, watchmaking, and luxury markets. Legor’s platinum powder in particular has been specially engineered for additive manufacturing and is a ruthenium-based 950 platinum.

Thanks to binder jetting’s ability to process precious metals more easily than laser-based powder bed fusion processes, and Legor’s deep knowledge of metallurgy and precious metals in particular, customers are able to take advantage of everything 3D printing has to offer. This includes design freedom and workflow agility, as well as a higher level of sustainability, since unused powders can be reused and minimal waste is generated in the production and post-processing of 3D prints.
