# LA startup Parivas launches Exo.1 3D printed watch

Six years ago, Mickey Brown and Justin Chang, both mechanical engineers with experience in the aerospace industry, set out to develop something new and innovative: a 3D printed wristwatch engineered using the same principles as aerospace design. Now, after thousands of development hours, the fruit of this labor has arrived in the form of the Exo.1. The watch, an intricate piece manufactured using metal binder jetting, has been launched via Brown and Chang's LA-based startup Parivas.

As the startup explains it, even its name is AM-inspired. (Parivas is derived from the latin phrase *Pario e Pulvas*, which means "created from dust", not unlike how its watches are born from fine metal powder.) Understanding first hand what the technology has brought to the aerospace industry in terms of design freedom, Parivas' founders knew that they could transfer these same benefits to create an original timepiece.

Simply looking at the Exo.1, there is no question that it is 3D printed. With fine lattices and a complex integrated architecture, the watch really emphasizes the AM aesthetic. As Parivas states: "the Exo.1 carries its innovation visibly, in its exterior." The watch itself comprises a monolithic 3D printed stainless steel structure that integrates the bezel, body, lugs, and dial features. This integrated architecture is not only an example of the design power of AM, it also guarantees alignment and reduces error risk from the assembly process.

The hour markers, which appear to be floating, have been printed with hollow cores so that radio-luminescent tritium tubes can be embedded. Powering the watch is the Parivas Caliber P1001S, a custom Swiss automatic skeleton movement based on the Sellita SW300-1SA architecture and finished with rhodium plating and soleillage. The watch itself is hand assembled by the Parivas team at its LA facility.

This sintering process is responsible for imparting a unique finish on each watch, which Parivas has dubbed The Solar Dusted finish since it creates a texture that catches light in dynamic ways.

The 3D printed watch is not yet on the market, but Parivas has opened a waitlist for its exclusive timepiece. Available only to American buyers, the Exo.1 watch is retailing for $7,500, and the first product batch (of just 30 units) is expected to ship in the first quarter of 2027.  "Additive is the only way you can construct from the bottom up and the inside out," said Mickey Brown, Parivas Co-Founder and CEO. "The more the technology refines, the more our watches can expand into this uncharted territory of unrestricted design.”

While Parivas' Exo.1 timepiece is unmistakably unique, it is not the [only luxury watch](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/3d-printed-consumer-products/jewelry/) to leverage 3D printing.
