Kongsberg acquires two AMCM multi-laser metal 3D printers
The Norwegian defense contractor will pair the machines with a technology partnership with EOS and AMCM to bring metal AM into missile and aerostructure programs
Kongsberg has acquired two multi-laser metal additive manufacturing systems from AMCM, the industrial 3D printing affiliate of Germany’s EOS, as part of a collaboration between the three companies to expand the use of metal AM across Kongsberg’s defense and security programs.
The equipment, an AMCM M 4K and an AMCM M 290-2 1kW system, is to be installed at Kongsberg’s main production facility in Norway, where the machines will enable printing of full-scale sections for technology demonstrators, product qualification builds and flyaway hardware.
The company is working to bring digital design and manufacturing methods into its operations, and has said the shift will give it earlier access to quality hardware within the design cycle, adding to its defense delivery capacity.
“Additive Manufacturing is opening a whole new opportunity to challenge the traditional design- and manufacturing process moving forward and represents a new way of thinking in design and manufacturing,” said Sverre Ulland, Senior Vice President of Strategic Production at Kongsberg’s Missiles & Aerostructures division.
“As we implement the tools and the way of working in our organization, the limiting factor will probably be the designer’s imagination and not the technology.”
Beyond supplying the machines, EOS and AMCM have committed to supporting Kongsberg through the initial implementation phases, working alongside EOS’s Additive Minds consulting unit.
“Establishing additive manufacturing as a reliable and scalable production technology requires close collaboration across technology, application development and industrialization,” said Markus Glasser, Senior Vice President of EMEA at EOS.
“Together with Kongsberg, we are building a long-term partnership that combines advanced AM technology with deep application expertise from our Additive Minds team to accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing across their design and production processes.”
