We just love this Folding Robot-R on Fab365

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.

Folding Robot-R is the second in a series of folding robots designed as an application for “4D” printing. It was inspired by the “Robby” robot that appears in the movie “Forbidden Planet (1956)” The original design is by Goo Sangkwon, of GOODesign Studio and CEO at 3D model marketplace Fab365.

“Unlike the first model [Folding Robot-A], we designed a new structure to create a circular body”, Sangkwon explains.

The transparent parts are included. However, since the inside is not visible when printing on a filament extrusion 3D printer, this robot is designed so that its characteristics are preserved even without transparent parts. The ring-shaped parts of the robot’s ears are the same size and shape, and their position may be changed.

Designed for easy folding of complex structures, this product has been designed to meet the needs of “4D printing” in the future, representing a new generation of products that continue to evolve even after production is complete.

“It will revolutionize 3D printing as a totally new structure robot that does not need to be supported nor assembled, just folded,” SangKwon says.

This design, like most designs on Fab365, does not require assembly, but the head, arms, and legs can rotate at various angles, so you can play with a variety of things. Especially, the arm has a double structure so that it can rotate in two directions, meaning it can be positioned to assume many different poses. In addition, the legs are made to protrude to the front and back, and the angle is precisely adjusted so that it does not fall over.

The folded part is concave so that anyone can fold it easily. SangKwon recommends usin a raft instead of a brim. The size of this product is – 144 x 123 x 45 mm (before assembly) and 123 x 48 x 115 mm (after assembly).
