Janne Kyttanen: how an industrial grade laser sintering machine enabled the ‘Lick Me Till Ice Cream’ tour across America

Scaling a business is always challenging but it’s an important factor when considering if your “idea” has the legs for the long run. Keeping the balance between your investments and understanding how secure your future really is is an art form by itself. Elon Musk compares running a company to eating glass and looking into the abyss all alone.

When I started in 3D printing there were really only two options for bringing your ideas to life. If you didn’t have the funds to go blind with your investments by buying your own expensive industrial machine, your only other option was to outsource so you could test, validate and verify your concepts before “going all in.”

Today there are new POPsibilities! Such as the recently released industrial grade laser sintering machine by Sinterit, the Lisa 2, which allows you to get into the game with just 10% of the usual investments.

At Pixsweet, we have been able to leverage the industrial grade Lisa 2 by Sinterit to create custom 3D Ice Pops on demand and in a cost-effective manner. This partnership offers brands a cool new way to maximize their marketing dollars by creating a unique experience that everyone will want to snap, tweet and share with the world.

The requirements for our tooling perfectly match the Lisa 2 laser sintering machines. Our order processing is very dynamic. For instance, somebody might come to us on a Thursday evening and want custom 3D ice pops for a brand launch pool party the coming Saturday. The only way for us to have industrial-level production on a 24-48h notice is to run nimble desktop laser sintering machines in-house.

Sinterit has industrial-level production capabilities for hundreds of thousands of products in our 3DTI production at Pixsweet and enables us to keep costs manageable. The math doesn’t lie. Current part costs using the Lisa 2 are about 21 euros while an average service bureau cost (between Shapeways, Sculpteo and imaterialise) sets you back 50 euros. All in all, our costs are less than half that. Most importantly, in doing our own production, our time to market can happen overnight. With a service bureau, you are looking at 5-7 days. When it comes to speed, quality and price, nothing else on the market currently compares to this.

Consider this fun example: our recent collaboration with RipnDip, a super cool Los Angeles-based clothing brand originally founded in Orlando, Florida in 2009 by Ryan O’Connor. RipnDip has a very specific voice and it often focuses on eccentric designs that aren’t afraid to stray from the norm. This made it a purrfect (see what I did there) partnership to create a completely customized experience for its “Lick me till Ice Cream” tour across America. We were able to print its branded cats, aliens and Rip N Dip logo in the thousands all while creating custom sleeve packaging to take their Pop-up events to a whole new level. Even though our audience has no clue how we are able to create this marketing magic experience, we know that at the heart of it all is the nimble and powerful, industrial grade sintering machine, Lisa 2.
