Iterate and Carbon apply DLS 3D printing to custom cricket gear

A collaboration between UK-based design consultancy Iterate and US additive manufacturing company Carbon has led to the development of a custom 3D printed arm guard for cricket, showcasing how Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) technology is being applied to performance sports equipment.

The protective gear features a dual-layer lattice structure printed with Carbon’s elastomeric materials. The outer layer is engineered for initial impact absorption, while a denser inner lattice delivers uniform contact and added resistance against high-energy strikes. According to Iterate, the combination improves both comfort and protection for the wearer.

The arm guard’s geometry was optimized for breathability and weight reduction – two critical requirements in cricket, where players require mobility and extended wear. The part is fully customizable to individual athlete specifications, leveraging one of the core advantages of DLS over traditional molding processes.

Iterate reports that this marks the first use of Carbon technology in its protective sportswear applications. Carbon’s additive platform is increasingly being adopted by brands seeking to streamline design cycles and develop differentiated, athlete-specific products.

Carbon states its technology enables faster time to market, greater material performance, and expanded design freedom compared to conventional manufacturing. The arm guard prototype reflects a broader trend of AM moving into end-use sports equipment.
