The Indian Space Research Organization, or ISRO for short, is expanding its capabilities in the aerospace and additive manufacturing arena with the purchase of a Magic 800 Directed Energy Deposition (DED) machine from French metal AM hardware manufacturer AddUp.

This new machine, released by AddUp in early 2023, is the largest 5-axis CNC, blown powder DED machine in their fleet. With its 2-kW laser, two exchangeable heads, and an impressive build volume of 1800 mm x 1000 mm x 1000 mm,the Magic 800 can meet the most demanding applications. It is also based on an enclosure inerted design which allows working with reactive powders.

Addup understands that ISRO is focused on development of components for space applications and enhancing R&D capabilities to better position India as a recognized player in the global space sector. With the addition of this DED machine, they will have the ability to develop critical parts for space exploration.

“Access to Space is a key part of our collaborative roadmap with ISRO and AddUp will provide our full support so that ISRO can realize all benefits of our Directed Energy Deposition technology to develop and industrialize innovative space applications.” said Julien Marcilly, CEO at AddUp.

AddUp was thrilled to welcome the ISRO team to its factory of Saint-Laurent les Tours in France for the commissioning of the machine before shipment to India in late August-2023. This visit occurred concurrently with the State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to France which marked the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership.

AddUp, a joint venture created by Michelin and Fives, is a global metal additive manufacturing OEM offering multi-technology production systems, including the FormUp range of robust and open-architecture Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) machines, as well as the BeAM Modulo and Magic lines of industrial Directed Energy Deposition (DED) machines. The combination of these processes allows AddUp customers the flexibility to choose the technology best suited for their specific application while also offering a unique ability to meet technical challenges, such as manufacturing parts combining these complementary technologies.

AddUp’s FormUp 350 PBF range is modular and scalable to provide the highest productivity while ensuring user safety. The DED machines are designed for industrial production and equipped with in-house designed and developed nozzles to provide maximum precision and very high productivity. To provide customers with a true Industry 4.0 solution, AddUp also provides a complete monitoring solution providing quality assurances after each and every build.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the space agency of India. The organization is involved in science, engineering and technology to harvest the benefits of outer space for India and mankind. ISRO is a major constituent of the Department of Space (DOS), Government of India. The department executes the Indian Space Programme primarily through various Centres or units within ISRO. The activities of ISRO are guided by its Chairman, who would also be the secretary of DOS and Chairman of Space commission – the apex body that formulates the policies and oversees the implementation of the Indian Space Program.
