South Korean satellite launch service company INNOSPACE is entering the automotive sector following confirmation it will supply its proprietary integrated additive manufacturing monitoring solution, INNO AM-X, to car manufacturer Hyundai.

The Hyundai agreement is part of a strategy to accelerate INNOSPACE’s business model into a “system- and solution-oriented” proposition based on its AM technologies. It’s targeting “high-reliability manufacturing industries” such as automotive, defense, and energy, which require aerospace-grade quality management systems.

INNOSPACE expands into automotive sector with Hyundai agreement

INNOSPACE took its first steps towards diversification at the end of last year, signing a distribution deal for Oqton software in South Korea, an AI- and cloud-based platform for high-precision industries, including aerospace, defense, automotive, medical, and energy.

Until then, INNOSPACE had focused its 3D printing technology solely on in-house production of aerospace parts at its Sejong facility, and had recently reported advances in hybrid rocket technology.

INNO AM-X is an integrated AM monitoring solution that unifies various metal 3D printing workflow elements, such as equipment status, process parameters, and quality-related data, into a single control framework.

“The additive manufacturing monitoring solutions accumulated through launch vehicle development goes beyond being a simple internal process management tool and has evolved into a competitive system applicable across high-precision, high-reliability industries,” stated Soojong Kim, founder and CEO of INNOSPACE.

“Starting with this supply to Hyundai Motor Group, we aim to expand across industries and strengthen our position not only in space transportation but also as a company with differentiated technological capabilities in the additive manufacturing field.”

The move is INNOSPACE’s first commercial deal for its proprietary tech and is another significant milestone in what’s been a growth-driven year.

The company established its in-house 3D printing division last summer and received ISO certification for its compliance management system shortly after.
