Industry 2030 report identifies 3D printing as key to Europe’s industrial future
CECIMO has approved of the recent expert group report

A recent report presented by the Industry 2030 Rountable to the European Commission has identified additive manufacturing as a key recommendation in the strategic growth of Europe’s industrial future. On the whole, the report outlines a vision for a European industry that simultaneously benefits society, the environment and the economy.
The Industry 2030 expert group report was published today and has already received a stamp of approval from CECIMO, the European Association of the Machine Tool Industry and related Manufacturing Technologies, which aims to promote the adoption of AM across Europe.
The EU-based group, made up of 15 national associations of machine tool builders, believes that the recognition of additive manufacturing in the report will help to bolster and promote the technology for the benefit of the continent. Additive manufacturing, it says, has the potential for significant value creation across Europe, as it enables shorter supply chains and reduced times and costs for development, designing and testing new products.
Notably, 3D printing technologies also create opportunities for more sustainable industrial practices, by generating less material waste and promoting on-demand (and even localized) production.
“We believe that it is an important step towards a long-term EU industry strategy for Europe,” CECIMO writes. “We are pleased to see that Strategic Value Chains (SVCs) and value creation networks are recognised as key drivers of success. In this respect, CECIMO, as rapporteur for the IIoT SVC at the Strategic Forum on IPCEIs, has been advocating for a comprehensive approach that would empower industrial actors across sectors to team up and lead together the digital transformation.”
With the Industry 2030 report published and submitted—it took over a year and a half to research and put together—CECIMO says it is now time for the European Commission to turn the vision into reality. Other highlighted technologies in the Industry 2030 report include gene-editing, quantum technologies, hydrogen fuel cells and more.
