UNYQ, a company specializing in custom 3D printed medical devices and wearables, announced that it has appointed the former Head of Design at IKEA, Marcus Engman, as its new Vice President of Design. Engman served as IKEA’s Head of Design for six years; he left in September 2018 to found his own design consultancy business.

Engman joins the UNYQ team effective immediately and will take up the responsibility for UNYQ’s product design, including for its prosthetic and orthotic devices. The designer will also spearhead new partnerships for UNYQ and work to drive its growth into new areas. Notably, Engman will work with UNYQ to develop bespoke 3D printed products targeted at the gaming community, which is increasingly affected by physical conditions such as carpal tunnel and posture problems.

“I am delighted to welcome Marcus to the UNYQ team,” said Eythor Bender, the Co-Founder and CEO of UNYQ. “Marcus brings a wealth of high-quality experience which will be invaluable as we continue to grow, expand our product range and enter new markets. UNYQ is disrupting the MedTech sector and supporting the physically challenged community with customized and affordable medical wearables. Marcus’ vision will have a hugely positive impact and, in many ways, already has.”

If any of this sounds familiar, it is likely because UNYQ announced a partnership with IKEA earlier this year through which the companies co-developed a prototype of an ergonomic chair for gamers. The prototype, unveiled at IKEA’s Democratic Design Days in Sweden in June 2018, will reportedly be available for a limited time starting in 2020.

Engman commented on his recent appointment, saying: “UNYQ is a truly inspiring company that is leading the way in inclusive design. That many people in the world that are navigating their daily lives while fighting the difficulties and stigma of physical challenges deserve to have a product that is both functional and stylish I am proud to be part of this movement and look forward to supporting the community.”

UNYQ offers a range of custom 3D printed products, all aimed at improving physical discomforts. Presently, the company’s product range consists of stylish covers for prosthetics and spinal orthotics for conditions like scoliosis. The Silicon Valley-based company, founded in 2014, says its goal is to bring bespoke 3D printed devices to people with physical challenges all over the globe. Presently, the company has offices in three countries and operations in 50 active markets.
