ICE’s 3D printed cable car station is complete
It is the highest 3D printed structure in the world and also one of the first 3D printed restaurants
Last September, we told you that the Czech construction company ICE was building the world’s first 3D printed cable car station. As ambitious and possibly far-fetched as that may have seemed, that project, the highest 3D-printed building, is now complete. The cable car station, designed by ATELIER3M, combines innovative design with sustainability, this project integrates prefabrication and on-site production to create a dynamic, functional structure that harmonizes with its natural surroundings.
A “stone” in the landscape
The conceptual design envisions the building as a “stone” resting seamlessly in the landscape. Functionally, the station is divided into two main areas: a section dedicated to cable car operations and an elongated space serving as a day room for visitors. The dynamic form of the structure reflects the building’s purpose and complements its environment, blending architectural aesthetics with practical utility.
The cable car station showcases the versatility of 3DCP technology, combining the benefits of prefabricated elements produced in a controlled environment with on-site construction. The entire building was printed using a single 3D printing machine, demonstrating the efficiency and precision of this approach.
The 3D printed walls are a highlight of the design, integrating thermal insulation, interior features, and exterior details in a single process. Two distinct textures define the building’s external appearance: a smoother, water- and air-resistant lower cantilever and a more rugged, rock-like upper section.
Sustainable Design Features
The building incorporates several sustainable features, including a green roof that enhances energy efficiency and blends with the surrounding environment. Fixed aluminum windows with ventilation slits provide natural airflow, while the terraced landscaping around the station creates inviting spaces for relaxation and interaction.
This project is a testament to the possibilities of 3D concrete printing and its potential to redefine architectural design and construction.
