# Hyperion Robotics brought in for 3D printed concrete sleepers on Teesside CO2 pipeline

Costain and A E Yates have brought on board Hyperion Robotics to produce [3D printed concrete](https://www.voxelmatters.com/heidelberg-materials-brings-3d-printed-concrete-to-milan-design-week-2026/) pipe support bases for the Northern Endurance Partnership's (NEP) onshore CO2 gathering system on Teesside.

The move is one of the first applications of robotic concrete manufacturing on carbon capture infrastructure in the UK, and comes as part of NEP’s CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure for Teesside-based carbon capture projects. Costain is NEP's delivery partner, and A E Yates provides civil engineering services for the project.

## Printed sleepers, reduced footprint

The three companies will produce approximately 90 high-strength concrete sleepers along 1.3 kilometers of onshore CO2 pipelines. Follow-on benefits of the process include reduced on-site labor and equipment requirements.

The approach cuts concrete and steel use by 40% and carbon emissions by up to 50%, when compared to traditional precast methods, and the resulting structures are up to ten times stronger than conventional equivalents while weighing up to 60% less. That is thanks, in part, to a thin, reinforced base design.

## Broader Teesside decarbonization push

Costain is also the delivery partner for Net Zero Teesside Power, which aims to be the world's first gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage. Around 200 Costain staff are currently delivering engineering, procurement and construction management on the NZT NEP project, supported by approximately 100 designers and engineers based in Manchester in the UK.

Of the subcontractor contracts awarded to date, 90% have gone to UK-based suppliers.
