Color is opening up a world of new possibilities for 3D printing. It’s helping surgeons create models to prepare for surgery, allowing manufacturers to develop better parts, and enabling customization not previously possible. After introducing full-color 3D printing capabilities with the MJF 500 series of systems, HP is now asking you to imagine ways to use color to elevate 3D printing? You can do that by submitting a color design to HP’s color 3D printing competition for a chance to win an HP ZBook 15 G5 Mobile Workstation.

Designs should focus on functional color ideas—either new or extended—that benefit the product’s consumer. Color should be used in a way that increases and/or expands the product’s desired function. Participants need also highlight why 3D printing is the best channel of production for their idea and what benefits come from using 3D printing for their envisioned product.

HP did not actively promote the competition, which is probably why not many entries where submitted so far. It’s a pity since MJF color technology could truly open some fascinating opportunities by making color 3D printing fast, more affordable and based on functional materials. Fortunately, we casually ran into one of the entries and inquired further to find out about the competition. before the deadline for submission, which is September 5, 2019. In general, HP has not yet been pushing hard on its color 3D printing technology, possibly because the company is focusing more on industrial applications (seen as a greater source of revenues) and because practical applications for it are still hard to come by.

The only other entry submitted so far to HP’s color 3D printing competition: a voronoi headphone holder

Now you can contribute to change all that by submitting a design on HP’s color 3D printing competition’s official page. The public can then vote for their favorite design and a winner will be announced by October 15th, 2019. The objects should be created in a .wrl, .3mf, or .obj format. An image of the part in .jpg, .gif, or .png format is required for submission; if chosen as a winner, the entrant must be able to provide a printable file in .wrl, .3mf, or .obj format.

The file should have maximum dimensions of 12 x 6 x 8 inches and incorporate the use of color in a functional capacity. Judging Criteria include functionality (the design is a functional part that utilizes the advantages of 3D printing), aesthetic appeal (the design includes an aesthetic component that offers an added value) and utilization of color (the design uses color in a creative manner that contributes to the functionality of the final part).

Entries submitted thus far include a 3D permeable orthosis that allows air to flow freely in the x, y and z axes even if a great portion of perforations are obstructed by clothing or bedding. The young patient or its parents are invited to numerically design its look to improve self-confidence. Another entrance is a voronoi headphone holder, where the voronoi pattern creates a natural effect and an appealing color transition.
