Norsk Titanium AS, a Norway-based company specializing in additively manufactured structural titanium parts for the aerospace industry, has announced the appointment of a new President and CEO: Michael J. Canario. Currently the President of Aerospace, Americas & Corporate Business Development for advanced composites company Hexcel, Canario will officially start his new role as President and CEO of Norsk Titanium in June 2018.

Canario, who holds a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University, has had (and continues to have) an illustrious career in the industrial sector. After spending eight years working for Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis AG) and BP Chemicals, Canario started his career at Hexcel. Since joining the advanced composites company over two decades ago, Canario has held executive positions in several of the companies business divisions, including sales and marketing, financial planning and analysis and operations.

Best known for its advanced composite materials, Hexcel has come to occupy an important place in the commercial aerospace industry, as well as in the space and defence and industrial sectors. Notably, the company is currently the leading supplier of carbon fiber, honeycomb and various other composite materials for the commercial aerospace segment.

Norsk Titanium’s Rapid Plasma Deposition technology

With its patented Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) technology, Norsk Titanium has honed in on the aerospace sector as well, providing aerospace-grade 3D printed structural titanium parts to aerospace OEMs at lower costs than traditional manufacturing. Last year, for instance, the company partnered with Spirit AeroSystems—one of the biggest manufacturers of fabricated parts for the aerospace industry—to supply 3D printed titanium aircraft parts.

Evidently, it is Canario’s expertise serving the aerospace industry that has made him an ideal candidate for a leadership position at Norsk Titanium.

“By demonstrating strong leadership skills in commercial aerospace through an entrepreneurial and innovative setting, we have no doubt Mike is exceptionally well-equipped to lead our company,” said John Andersen, Jr., Norsk’s Chairman and Interim CEO. “While our current focus is structural titanium components for aerospace, RPD is truly a platform technology. Over time, we will pursue different business models across markets and industries. In this, we will benefit from Mike’s track-record for developing strong relationships with strategic business partners.”

Canario echoed Andersen’s enthusiasm, saying: “The opportunity to lead a pioneer in the emerging field of digital manufacturing is truly exciting. Norsk is poised for tremendous growth by enabling the aerospace supply chain to deliver significant cost and cycle time reductions through the application of truly innovative technology. I’m impressed by what Norsk has accomplished to date and the potential for further extension. I look forward to creating a substantial value proposition for all stakeholders by working with our team, industrial partners and customers.”

As Canario takes up his new position at Norsk Titanium next month, it will be interesting to follow new directions the company goes in as well as its growth.
