GKN Powder Metallurgy opens new North American HQ and AM Customer Center

GKN Powder Metallurgy today announced the opening of its new North American Powder Metallurgy Headquarters and Additive Manufacturing Customer Center. The new facility, located in Auburn Hills, Michigan, spans 38,260 square feet and brings together over 80 employees from GKN Powder Metallurgy’s three businesses: Hoeganaes, GKN Sinter Metals and GKN Additive.

The new HQ and AM Customer Center site greatly expands the company’s global additive manufacturing network and broadens its scope of in-house powder metallurgy capabilities. Notably, by bringing together team members from across its three businesses, GKN Powder Metallurgy hopes to create a fertile environment for collaborations and enhanced customer experiences. To further support this goal, the facility includes 20,700 square feet of collaborative working areas and 17,700 square feet of shop floor space.

“We are excited to start a new journey in Auburn Hills with a space that is dedicated to our team, our community and the advanced technology we create for our customers,” said Reid Southby, President of GKN Sinter Metals Large Segment. “This building reinforces our commitment to the North American market and continued global growth.”

Presently, GKN Powder Metallurgy has nearly 30 facilities across nine countries. In the U.S. alone, the company has operations in New Jersey, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Tennessee and North Carolina.

The new building in Auburn Hills, MI houses a 3,200 square foot AM Customer Center which is equipped with two EOS M290 DMLS 3D printers. The hardware will enable GKN Powder Metallurgy to produce functional prototypes for clients within a two-week lead time. The quick turnaround for metal prototypes will make it easier for clients to test parts and products early on in the development process for usability, ergonomics, manufacturability, materials and more.

The new facility in Michigan is also reportedly capable of expansion as GKN Powder Metallurgy continues its global growth in the additive manufacturing sphere.
