# GKN Aerospace integrates AM Explorer software to improve AM workflow

[GKN Aerospace’s Centre of Excellence in Trollhättan, Sweden,](https://www.voxelmatters.com/gkn-aerospace-invests-50-million-additive-fabrication-capability/) has integrated [Interspectral’s AM Explorer software](https://www.voxelmatters.com/interspectral-releases-am-explorer-visualization-software-for-the-metal-am-market/) into its additive manufacturing (AM) operations. The move is part of the company’s broader push to improve production efficiency and address sustainability goals through digital manufacturing technologies.

AM Explorer, [developed by Swedish firm Interspectral](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/interspectral/), provides 3D visualization and AI-based analysis tools specifically for metal AM. At GKN Aerospace, the software supports quality assurance, process monitoring, and data analysis—key factors in ensuring the reliable production of complex aerospace components.

According to Martin Thordén of GKN Aerospace, the shift toward additive methods offers a more efficient alternative to conventional manufacturing, which often relies on large castings and forgings that generate significant material waste. “By using additive manufacturing, we can build parts layer by layer with metal wire or powder, drastically reducing the amount of raw material and energy used. This helps cut emissions, lower costs, and shorten production lead times,” Thordén said.

The adoption of AM Explorer is also part of GKN Aerospace’s effort to reduce its dependence on traditional supply chains, which have faced mounting challenges in cost, lead time, and reliability. Additive manufacturing is a viable solution to these issues, offering greater flexibility and sustainability in production.

Interspectral and GKN Aerospace began working together in early 2024 and are now scaling up the use of AM Explorer across production. The companies are jointly developing AI-based anomaly detection features tailored to the materials, applications, and large-scale metal printers used at the Trollhättan facility.

One major area of focus is integration with GKN’s new Nikon SLM NXG XII 600 metal 3D printers. These systems feature an open data architecture that allows AM Explorer to access over 400 data points from each build. This has helped streamline GKN’s workflow by reducing the need for custom internal monitoring tools.

The combination of AM Explorer and Nikon SLM machines enables faster production cycles through real-time data insights, improved process stability with AI-assisted defect detection, and better resource use, supporting GKN Aerospace’s sustainability targets. The software automatically processes high-resolution build data using AI models trained on NXG image sets. Engineers can then use AM Explorer’s visualization tools to explore anomalies, review build data, and generate quality reports—all within a single interface.

Thomas Rydell from Interspectral noted, “Our collaboration with GKN Aerospace is focused on solving real production challenges in AM. By combining their manufacturing experience with our analytics platform, we’re working to improve reliability, automation, and cost-efficiency in aerospace production.”

GKN Aerospace says the integration is a step toward scaling additive manufacturing for more critical engine components while maintaining the performance and safety standards required in aviation.
