GH Induction produces largest EBM 3D printed pure copper coil

GH Induction, a Spanish specialist in pure copper coils, has produced the largest pure copper coil, 3D printed by EBM technology, opening new boundaries in heat treatment processes. The company headquartered in Valencia, Spain, markets its 3D printed pure coil production methods under the brand 3D Inductors and has deployed hundreds of 3D printed coils since they were introduced in 2014.

The company’s experience is based on field-proven and patented 3D printing coil technology (3DPCoil) which in turn is based on EBM technology from GE Additive. In this latest effort, the build volume of the GE Additive X2A system used by GH Induction has nearly doubled, by increasing Z-height to 350 mm.

Increasing capabilities for additive manufacturing of pure copper parts beyond the current boundaries makes it now possible to either 3D print larger coils that can be used to heat treat a single larger part, or to stack multiple smaller coils, optimizing the construction volume in the most efficient way.

The company’s ability to stack and perform a complete optimization of the build volume and to process pure copper represents a significant benefit as they can generate gains in energy efficiency and also result in longer life for the inductors’ coils.

The RRR indicator guarantees copper purity of the coils’ AM material and therefore its efficiency. A high value for this indicator certifies that the material has a very high density, is of high purity and has no internal voids. This allows for extraordinary thermal and electrical conductivity. Ordinary copper has an RRR value between 5 and 150, OFHC is between 100 and 200, while very pure copper is considered to be between 200 and 5000 (GH 3D Inductors)

GH Inductors reported that, according to the latest tests conducted by CERN on electrical and thermal conductivity at low temperatures, GH is the material that has obtained the best results, with an RRR greater than 250, out of all the ones tested.
