Gantri rolls out more customization options for 3D printed lamps

Back in 2020, we covered a California-based startup that was leveraging 3D printing to bring unique lighting designs to market. Today, we’re pleased to hear more about the company, Gantri, and its ongoing mission to bring greater customization to consumer lighting products (and beyond) through the use of software and digital manufacturing. To this end, Gantri has launched Gantri You, a new feature on its website that enables customers to choose from a greater color range for its 3D printed lamps (with up to 4,000 different combinations).

With Grantri You, customers can choose from 26 different color options, enabling them to customize different parts of the light fixture, including the 3D printed body, and the power cords. The color is applied after the 3D printing process: each lamp is 3D printed from a custom-developed bio-based material and then carefully sanded and painted to meet the customer’s specifications. The company also plans to roll out further customization options, like finishes and materials, down the line.

The new customization feature is the result of Gantri’s updated software program. As Gantri CEO Ian Yang, explained: “To make Gantri You work, we had to reengineer our entire manufacturing software system. Now, every time a customer chooses a range of options, the system creates a discreet job list for a particular stock on the fly. This new system allows us to give you a much wider range of options without sacrificing efficiency so you can enjoy exactly the product that you want without paying luxury prices.”

Ultimately, Gantri You showcases how physical production workflows can function like software, where code is adjusted and the resulting physical product adjusts accordingly. For now, the company is focused exclusively on bringing this capability to lighting products (it works with a range of different designers), however Gantri is interested in going beyond this market, looking to other furniture products.

“With Gantri You, we’re taking this to the next level,” Yang adds. “Now, not only can you have a home that’s filled with objects that represent who you are, you can make them exactly the color you love, to build a home that reflects your authentic self.”
