The future of 3D printed metal is at the METHESIS Milan Design Week Exhibit

After Synthesis in 2014 and Arthesis in 2015, this year again we are once again going to bring the state of the art in 3D printing hardware, software and materials to the Fuorisalone Design Week Events taking place around the Salone del Mobile Furniture Fair design in Milan. The future of 3D printed metal is almost here and it means that designers will be able to produced finished high end objects with 3D printing.

In collaboration with the global 3D CAD software leader Autodesk and world leading metal 3D printer manufacturer Sisma, MƎTHESIS is going to show that a new era for metal 3D printed high-end, commercially viable design products is at hand. To prove it we asked 10 of the top designers in the world of 3D printing to envision a new generation of objects centered on the theme of “Tableware Products” for the dinner table

Immagine1We now present the concrete results of their vision. Not just concepts but finished products, designed using Autodesk’s powerful Fusion 360 CAD software and 3D printed directly in metal (steel or bronze) using Sisma’s unique Laser Metal Fusion mysint100 3D Printer. The collection and the 3D printer are on display during Milan’s Design Week Fuorisalone at the exclusive location in Via Tortona 20, at the epicenter of all Milan Design Week events.

3D printing is no longer just a fashion. This means that the media hype has died down but also that what remains are true applications and a great promise for the future of manufacturing. This, which can be considered the greatest potential of 3D printing clashes with both design world dynamics (very much focused on the “now”) and those of the current state of the 3D pritning industry itself.

“The evolutionary state of metal 3D printing makes this technology a powerful tool for designers that more inclined to innovation. The Mysint 3D printer, based on a process of Laser Metal Fusion, enables the creation og objects with unique features, along unexplored roads both in terms of aesthetic and functional properties. mysint literally breaks down the wall between idea and form, freeing the creativity like never before,” said Lisa Micheletto, Project Leader Additive Manufacturing, Sisma.

Today the largest 3D printer manufacturers and services, those that are driving industry revenues and profits, have no real need for market expansion as they are all producing at full capacity and are finding challenges in implementing real scalability of their operations. Scaling up a software company is relatively easy but scaling up the production of highly complex manufacturing hardware and advanced materials is a whole different matter.


The larger 3D printing companies need to open up (to) new market and work together with the new, smaller and highly technological 3D printing companies in order to implement a more streamlined workflow. Autodesk has been doing this aggressively for the past five years. As a metal 3D printer manufacturer Sisma is now doing exactly this at METHESIS by making the jump for jewelry and dental manufacturing to design products (and the new, larger 3D printer will go a long way in lowering costs and increasing production speeds). The fact that a giant like Lenovo is now getting involved is a good sign for the future.


Immagine3To build this visionary project MƎTHESIS designers were asked to exploit the processing power of Lenovo’s ThinkPad P40 Yoga, the first portable workstation on the market. This system offers maximum graphic precision through its highly sensitive touch screen and pen. “Artists and professional designers are looking for absolute precision and accuracy. For this reason, they chose ThinkPad Yoga P40, the high performance mobile workstation that allows you to unlock the full potential of professional creativity. We are proud to participate in the realization of MƎTHESIS collection that ushers in a new era for creativity and to be present with our workstation – desktop and mobile – in the most important week dedicated to design in Italy and in the world”, said Corrado Massone, Workstation Business Manager, Lenovo.

Starting from the idea and moving on through the digital creative workflow  the entire collection was designed using Autodek’s Fusion 360 software and 3D printed in bronze metal using Sisma’s unique Laser Metal Fusion (LMF) technology. “Generative design is a central point the ‘The Future of Making Things’ concept from Autodesk; it is a process where the infinite computing power of cloud determines alternative designs based on parameters set by the designer, such as the weight, the resistance, the shape. In generative design, the designer’s goal is shared with the computer that explores the space of possible solutions to find and create unthinkable ideas differently,” said Emanuel Arnaboldi, Country Leader, Autodesk Italy. “An approach that allows the optimization of costs, materials and production techniques in the first phase of the process, not when the project is ready to move to the stage of production where costs are exponentially higher. Autodesk is pursuing several initiatives related to generative design, among these Project Dreamcatcher, a new generation of computational design.”
