# Full-stack 3D printed battery maker gets seed funding to develop innovative product

An innovative new company that’s aiming to scale hybrid manufacturing technology to [3D print high-performance energy storage systems](https://www.voxelmatters.com/chinese-researchers-develop-3d-printed-metal-lithium-battery/) has confirmed a $7.1m seed round of funding, co-led by Outlander VC and Harpoon Ventures.

Material Hybrid Manufacturing Inc. has developed a proprietary tech called HYBRID3D, a chemistry-agnostic platform that [3D prints full-stack batteries](https://www.voxelmatters.com/sakuu-proves-commercial-viability-of-3d-printed-battery-electrodes/) in custom geometries.

The company – founded in 2023 – claims its batteries can use up to 90% of the interior volume, thanks to a combination of advanced additive and semiconductor manufacturing techniques that enable the printing of energy directly into the device's structure. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for applications across drones, defense, medical, wearables, and much more.

Material already has $1.25m project on its books with the US Air Force via a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award, on which it’s collaborating with PDW and other leading US defense developers to integrate conformal batteries directly into Class I unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

“The world doesn't need another breakthrough in battery chemistry; it needs a breakthrough in how we make energy storage,” stated Gabe Elias, CEO of Material. “We are building the tools to make electrical energy formless. Whether it’s filling the hollow profile of a fixed-wing drone or conforming to the body of a wearable device user, our platform allows electrical power to behave like a fuel design element. Our technology allows us to deploy anywhere and print exactly what the application demands.”

Material claims its tech is projected to increase pack-level energy densities by over 50%, and reduce module weight by more than 22 percent for the US Air Force project, thanks to the elimination of the wasted space that’s inherent in standard cylindrical cell arrangements.

And the company’s advances aren't limited solely to industry applications. Material is working with consumer electronics partners on next-generation products, and says it has pilots underway across mobility, robotics, and wearables.
