# French jewelry house Boucheron debuts collection made from 3D printed sand

French luxury jewelry house Boucheron, founded in 1858, has never shied away from innovation. In the late 19th century, this innovation came in the form of combining pearls with diamond rondelles for the first time. Today, Boucheron is pushing the limits of jewelry design with 3D printing. In its latest capsule collection, called *Quatre Sand*, Boucheron has combined 3D printed black sand with gold to create a series of seven bold cuff bracelets and bangles.

The [jewelry collection](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/3d-printed-consumer-products/jewelry/) is a reinterpretation of the jewelry brand's *Quatre* line, which is also known for its contrasting of black with more traditional fine jewelry materials (in this case white gold and diamonds). The *Quatre Sand* series, however, introduces a less conventional approach as well as a bigger, bolder style. The less conventional approach is, of course, 3D printing.

The collection, designed by Boucheron creative director Claire Choisne, is made using a sand binder jetting process, which selectively applies a polymer binder to layers of fine sand particles. The resulting print is then processed to remove the binder, resulting in a solid and dense structure.

As Boucheron [explains](https://www.boucheron.com/gb/our-maison/the-freedom-to-create/the-innovation-capsules) it: "The process consists in agglomerating grains of sand by applying a polymer, which acts like a glue, in successive layers barely a millimeter thick, like a millefeuille. This process, innovative in the jewelry world, gives the material remarkable strength while preserving the texture of the sand, revealing an original aesthetic faithful to the avant-garde spirit of the Maison."

The sand pieces were subsequently assembled onto gold structures, resulting in a series of bangles and cuff bracelets that contrast the smoothness and brilliance of the gold with the dark, grainy texture and geometric shape of the sand.

The *Quatre Sand* collection is Boucheron's latest capsule collection that intentionally explores the use of innovative techniques and unconventional materials. The jewelry house has made a point to release a forward-thinking collection like this every year since 2020. Last year, Boucheron released the *Quatre 5D Memory *ring, a ring made using Glassomer technology that encodes a sound work developed by IRCAM - Centre Pompidou in its design. In 2020, the unconventional material integrated into the *Quatre *ring and cuff was denim, which works surprisingly well along with white gold and diamonds. Choisne has also previously used sand 3D printing in her jewelry design, leveraging the technology in 2024's *Or Bleu* collection, inspired by the waters of Iceland.
