Freemelt receives two new orders
One for a eMELT machine from a global orthopedic implant OEM, and one for E-PBF technology from a customer in the UK
Freemelt, a Swedish developer of metal 3D printing technology, has recently received two new orders – one from a global orthopedic implant OEM for a proof-of-concept of serial production capabilities by Freemelt’s industrial eMELT machine, and the other from a customer in the United Kingdom to validate Freemelt’s E-PBF technology for production of 3D printed tungsten parts.
Order from global orthopedic implant OEM
The customer is a leading innovator in the orthopedic implant industry, strongly focusing on advancing patient outcomes through advanced technology and material science. One of their key areas is the development of advanced porous metal structures that mimic the natural structure of bone, resulting in implants with better integration and stability within the body.
AM is increasingly used to manufacture porous metal structures due to its precise control of the manufacturing process. These features enable the production of implants that integrate more efficiently with the body’s bone tissue – improving both functionality for the patient and the implant’s lifespan in the body. E-PBF (Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion) is especially suitable due to its speed and cost-effectiveness.
With the aging global population and the rising prevalence of conditions like osteoarthritis, the demand for joint replacements is expected to increase significantly – further boosting the market potential for AM in the orthopedic sector.
“This order is a major milestone for Freemelt and I am proud that we can add the first orthopedic implant OEM to our customer list. During the past years, we have been in close discussions and collaboration with this OEM, and the fact that they now choose to invest in evaluating Freemelt’s E-PBF technology and industrial machines to strengthen their position as a frontrunner in innovative manufacturing of orthopedic implants is a true steppingstone for us. The orthopedic implant industry has the highest adoption of AM for serial production, and we will do our utmost for a long and fruitful relationship with this OEM,” said Daniel Gidlund, CEO of Freemelt.
Order from UK customer
The UK customer is a leader in research and innovation across various fields, including nuclear energy, sustainable materials, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Through research and industrial collaborations, the customer focuses on advancing metal manufacturing techniques, including innovative powder processing and AM.
“Thanks to our successful progress in printing tungsten and collaborations with customers like UKAEA (United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority), it is rewarding that another customer in the United Kingdom has decided to validate Freemelt’s E-PBF technology for tungsten manufacturing. This order further strengthens our position within the UK additive manufacturing community, particularly in tungsten applications. It also underscores the unique capabilities of our technology to efficiently process challenging materials with the highest material quality,” said Daniel Gidlund.

Great article here – done a little additive manufacturing video production myself so always good to read up on this – https://industreel.co.uk
