Though you may know him best as the founder of NY-based 3D design firm Studio Bitonti, Francis Bitonti has a much wider professional repertoire, including a research position at the Digital Arts and Humanities Research Center at Pratt Institute and a teaching job at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s School of Architecture, USA. Bitonti’s name is now also emblazoned across the cover of a newly published book, entitled 3D Printing Design: Additive Manufacturing and the Materials Revolution.

The new book, recently published and released by Bloomsbury, provides an in depth guide to additive manufacturing technologies within the framework of design disciplines. Authored by Bitonti—an expert in the intersecting fields of AM and design—the book includes various interesting segments, including an insider’s look at Studio Bitonti and how it is using AM in design practices, as well as interviews with designers, business owners and 3D printing experts.

Bitonti 3D Printing Design Book

Anatol Just, Digital Manufacturing Technical Demonstrator at London Metropolitan University, offered a glowing review of 3D Printing Design: “I highly recommend this book to any designers wanted to delve deeper into the world of 3D printing. It is full of great ideas and case studies, and successfully introduces additive manufacturing from the ground up, sharing the author’s insight, passion and involvement in emerging trends.”

“[The book] fills a void in terms of educational texts: there is no direct competitor that I know of on this admittedly focused topic,” commented Fleet Hower, lecturer at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. “This is one of the first texts to address emerging design and fabrication techniques in the fashion industry. By coupling both topics, the book merges these formerly discrete activities into a cohesive single process.”

As one of the first formal texts to explicitly deal with the increasingly overlapping fields of additive manufacturing and design, 3D Printing Design has a lot of ground to cover. Bitonti does not shy away from this expansive area, looking at the trend of 3D body scanning in fashion, how rapid prototyping is changing design methods, and how new 3D printing material are impacting medical design, among other topics.

“Writing this book was a real pleasure,” Bitonti told us. “It gave me an opportunity to reflect on the work that we have done at Studio Bitonti through a macro lens. It’s very easy to get lost in the details of day-to-day operations. I wanted this book to answer questions about why we do what we do and what should be next.”

Bitonti’s new book is now available to buy on Amazon or from Bloomsbury, where the hardback edition is listed for £58.50 and paperback for £19.79.
