Formlabs has announced a partnership with Germany-based BEGO, a manufacturer of prosthodontics and implants for the dental industry. Together, the partners aim to bring temporary and permanent 3D printed crowns and bridges to market for dental applications.

Through the collaboration, Formlabs dental customers will have access to BEGO’s range of restorative materials for dentistry, enabling them to 3D print temporary and permanent crowns for patients directly. This capability—of being able to produce dental restorations using a fully digital workflow—is expected to reduce costs and turnaround times, resulting in better patient care.

“Directly printing temporary crowns and bridges are one of the most sought after applications from Formlabs customers,” explained Dávid Lakatos, Chief Product Officer at Formlabs. “By partnering with BEGO and leveraging their 130 years of dental experience, we will be able to not only address this need, but take it a step further by offering materials for permanent crowns. We are excited to see how this partnership can continue to advance the dental industry and overcome the major challenges labs and dentists face as digital dentistry becomes a standard for patient care.”

BEGO has been active in the dentistry world since its founding in 1890. The company’s founder, Dr. h.c. Wilhelm Herbst, pioneered the use of special filling gold for treating cavities. Today, the company’s innovative spirit endures. For instance, BEGO has been developing 3D printing materials for the dental market for over 20 years now. With the Formlabs partnership, it is solidifying its commitment to additive technologies in dentistry.

Formlabs has also been a key player in the dental AM segment. In fact, the company recently announced the formation of a dedicated Dental Business Unit as well as the launch of a new 3D printer for dental applications, the Form 3B.

“We could not be happier to partner with Formlabs, especially at this time, where digital dentistry is reaching a breakthrough,” said Axel Klarmeyer, CEO of BEGO Dental. “It took some time and a lot of effort and commitment of all involved people to be able to offer to the market a fully validated workflow for final restorations. This partnership underlines BEGO’s leading position in the dental 3D printing materials market.”

Thanks to the collaboration, dental professionals using the Formlabs 3B and Form 2 3D printers will be able to leverage BEGO’s resins to 3D print temporary crowns and bridges as well as permanent single crows, inlays, onlays and veneers. The combination of BEGO’s materials and Formlabs’ 3D printing technology is expected to drastically reduce the cost of producing crowns and bridges while also improving product quality. Among the beneficial properties of BEGO’s 3D printing materials are low discoloration and aging rates, low plaque accumulation, and high comfort because of minimal temperature sensitivity. The materials are also available in a range of shades to best match the customer.

The partners will be presenting their joint dental 3D printing offering at LMT Lab Day this weekend in Chicago.
