First-Ever Institutional EU Maker Faire to Take Place at European Parliament, Brussels

On May 31, the EU institutions are hosting the first-ever Institutional EU Maker Faire, which will feature Makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life.

Event co-organized by Startup Europe, an initiative of Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content & Technology (CNECT) and the EU Policy Lab, an initiative of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), European Commission, Think Young (TY) and Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition (MFR)

The four organisers firmly believe that the Maker culture represents a huge opportunity for Europe. New tools for democratized production are boosting innovation and entrepreneurship in manufacturing, in the same way that the Internet has lowered the barriers to entry for tech startups, creating the foundation for new products and processes that can help to revitalize European manufacturing. 

Moreover, maker movement can inspire and empower more young people to excel in design and STEM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and to pursue careers making things in manufacturing.

That is why the EU institutions are hosting the first-ever EU Institutional Maker Faire, which will feature Makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life. These projects will delight and amaze us, and some may very well create industries and jobs of the future.

Makers – FabLab Exhibition:

  • Filo find and Locate: filo is a smart key finder that helps you find and locate your valuables. Filo is the name of our startup founded in September, 2014. Today, Filo is sold online and available into several italian retailers. Many companies have already chosen Filo as a customised, smart and innovative corporate gift. In order to answer companies’ needs, Filo’s technology has already been merged on demand to add some specs to the device on a OEM basis.
  • FryskLab, Europe’s first Library FabLab: FryskLab Elements is an educational program, focusing on 2D, 3D, electronics and programming, for the age range 10-18. They go to schools and libraries with their mobile lab to let young people get acquainted with new technology and maker culture. Fab the Library! is our offering to (public) libraries to set up their own library maker space. MediaLiteracyMakers is offered as a Maker Party during which teachers and librarians get to know new technology, but, more importantly, have to think what this means for their profession. MediaLiteracyMakers is based on the concept of digital literacy as described by Doug Belshaw in his book ‘The Essential Elements of Digital Literacies’.
  • INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics): ArduSiPM a low cost Cosmic Ray and Nuclear Radiation detector. The ArduSiPM is an innovative cosmic ray and nuclear radiation detector based on Silicon Photomultiplier coupled with a

Scintillator done with Makers philosophy . The device can detect cosmic ray and nuclear radiation, the low cost permits an use in educational project for cosmic ray survey , it is used in Nuclear Medicine application and radiation monitoring.

  • M-LAB (the Fab-Lab of Vilnius): “Employ the wind to make wind” – small windmill which generates enough electricity to power up a used computer fan or even Arduino. Made using a recycled printer motor parts, hand crafted wood, 3D printed case and laser cut parts. “The Owl” – symbol/logo aka “Makey” of Lithuanian school and mini Maker Faires. An interactive 170 cm high (200 cm with the stand) installation which is designed to be cut using a Mini Fab-Lab FSlasercutter (30×50 cm bed size). “Something 3310” – a robot made from recycled parts – old VHR player cassette, printer and CD-ROM motors, metal frame, combined with Arduino microcontroller, sensors and diodes. “Musical Leg” – absurd art installation.
  • Mediterranean FabLab: 1. “Octagon” is an affordable housing prototype, realized by digital fabrication technology and designed to withstand natural disasters. Octagon is an affordable housing prototype, which responds to catastrophic weather events and which is easily and quickly rebuilt and repaired in case of damage. Octagon is the first project of know-house methodology. know-house approach wants to merge the global digital fabrication knowledge to the specific issues of a local context, to find an architectural precise solution. 2. “Hydroponic House System” is a “smart” hydroponic system for the cultivation of plants, controlled by Arduino and many sensors that constantly monitor environmental, structural and vegetal parameters of its. Hydroponic System House aims to investigate how the vegetables can be used as technological systems to improve the structural, insulation and environmental performances of same parts of the architectural artifacts. The design of the modul that composing the entire wall system, was realized with parametric design software able to modify the geometry of the system. The system that we have realized is composed by a structure for the germination, by a device for monitoring of the quality of crop (light, pH, temperature and humidity) and by a water distribution and recirculation system
  • Troteclaserbv: Experience live demonstrations of the Trotec laser cutting and engraving machine. Wood, paper, acrylic, textile etc. can be processed.
  • VRLab Brussels: VRLab Brussels, making your own virtual reality experience. VRLab Brussels will let people experience virtual reality (VR) experiences. The difference with the usual experience is that the goal isn’t merely to

enjoy but rather to understand and learn HOW to make your own, from cutting the headset to writing the software. We believe that virtual reality shouldn’t just be a tool for large corporation but rather a new medium for all to explore with and a perfect way to discover new technologies.

10h00-11h30: Workshop on “DIYBiology: Hacking Living Material” by Pieter van Boheemen (Waag Society, Netherlands)

Workshop description: Fablabs, makerspaces and hackspaces are entering the domain of biology, making the required expensive technology low-cost and accessible to non-scientists. Such DIY devices, often referred to as ‘hacks’, enable citizens, designers and artists to explore the possibilities of working with living materials. In this workshop we will hack a webcam into a microscope and use it to examine several biological materials including your own DNA.

Pieter van Boheemen is a hacker, artist, engineer, researcher and teacher driving forward Free & Open Source Technologies as a catalyzer for social innovation. He leads the Open Wetlab, Open Design Lab and FabLab Amsterdam at Waag Society Institute for Art, Science and Technology. He has organized dozens of hands-on art science “Do It Together Bio” workshops, founded and let > 150 Dutch DIYBio Community events, runs the micro-organism store PetShop.bio, and presents a YouTube channel on making and hacking things. The outcomes have been displayed at mayor international art, design and science museums and festivals. In 2015 he also established the first international open collaborative distributed biohackers training program, BioHack Academy, supporting the launch of new biohacking groups in the US, Brazil, Japan, Iran and across Europe.

He coordinates several European research projects within his group at Waag and participated in KIICS, MakingSense, BrainHack and DITOs.

11h30-13h00: Workshop on “Make a DIY textile sensor” by Zoe Romano (WeMake Makerspace, Italy)

Workshop description: Smart textiles are fabrics developed with new technologies and allow seamless integration of textiles with electronic elements like microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators. Wearable electronics gained lots of attention because they are becoming more accessible to the non-technical crowd thanks to recent open source and educational approach. In this workshop you’ll learn about textile sensors and soft interactions: create your own sensor and connect it with a micro-controller to explore its behaviour.

Zoe Romano lives in Milano and in 2014 launched a Fablab called WeMake, focused on education and rapid-prototyping design practices. Since 2011 she’s been exploring the world of makers with Wefab, a series of initiatives for the dissemination of open design and digital fabrication in Italy. She’s been involved into media activism and political visual art for 10 years, working on precarity, social production, material and immaterial labor in creative and service industries. She also works as digital strategist at Arduino and is in the board of Make in Italy Foundation CDB.

14h00-15h30:  Workshop on “Low Cost/DIY/DIT Environmental Sensors: Making the Future of Sensing” by Guillem Camprodon (Fab Lab Barcelona, Spain)

Workshop description: What are the levels of air pollution around your home or business? And what about noise pollution? And humidity? Now imagine that you could know them, share instantly and compare with other places in your city, in real

time… How could this information help to improve your city? Since 2013 Smart Citizen wants to answer these questions and many more, through the development of open solutions for participatory sensing. The goal is to empower citizens through Fab Labs in building locally productive and globally connected cities.

Guillem Camprodon is an interaction designer working on the intersection between the Internet of Things and Digital Fabrication. Since 2010 he works atIAAC Fab City Research Laboratory where he currently leads the development of Smart Citizen, a global open-source crowdsensing platform. He is also a regular advisor on many projects as an interaction expert and he teaches regularly workshops on design and technology.

15h30-17h00: Workshop on “3D Printing” by Stijn De Mil (FabLab Factory, Belgium)

Workshop description: 3D printing technology got an important place in the Maker Movement and is an attraction for everyone visiting fablabs, hacker- and makerspaces around the World.  More than any other tool in these shops, it inspires and fascinates people. In this workshop we will demystify this technology, and use it to make our own personalised things.

Stijn De Mil is an educator, engineer and entrepreneur working in the field of education, social innovation and entrepreneurship.  In 2011 he founded FabLab Brussels at the Erasmus University College of Brussels and in 2013 he started the first FabLab@School in the BeNeLux in the Sint-Jozef highschool in Erpe-Mere.  He has organized dozens of hands-on STEAM-related workshops, activities and bootcamps.  In 2015 he started the company FabLab Factory, to help schools and organisations in starting up makerspaces and STEAM-classrooms.  For Stijn, education is the key to solve the challenges we face today and tomorrow.  For that the educational system will need to get disrupted in order to fully flourish the 21st century skills in each and every one of us.

Think Young (TY)

ThinkYoung is the first think tank that focuses on young people.It was founded in 2007 and has expanded to have offices in Brussels, Geneva and Hong Kong. It is a not-for-profit organisation, with the aim of making the world a better place for young people, by involving them in decision making processes and by providing decision makers with high quality research on key issues affecting young people.
