UK 3D printing filament company Filamentive is certainly setting the standard for environmentally conscious AM products. Not only did the company recently issue a declaration of recycled content for its 3D printing materials, but it has now released a 100% recycled PET filament.

Though 3D printing is often billed as a more eco-conscious manufacturing process than other mass production methods (because it builds additively rather than subtractively), it still relies on the consumption of plastics and generates its fair share of plastic waste. Filamentive is acutely aware of this dilemma and is working to find solutions.

Its new material, ONE PET, is made entirely from post-consumer PET plastic bottles and demonstrates Filamentive’s commitment to making its business model as ecological as possible.

The filament was developed in collaboration with Tridea, a Belgian recycling business whose mission is to repurpose and reprocess waste into 3D printing filaments. The company works closely with local plastic collectors, recyclers and manufacturers to transform European plastic waste into usable filament.

Ravi Toor, the founder and managing director of Filamentive, said of the collaboration: “In a world where less than 10% of plastic is recycled and in an industry where plastic is the material feedstock, we feel it is our duty to prioritise the use of recycled materials, and by working with Tridea, we are now making progress towards reducing post-consumer waste which has a considerable lower recycling rate than post-industrial waste streams.”

In terms of its usability, the 100% recycled ONE PET filament has demonstrated good print qualities, including excellent layer adhesion, stiffness and toughness. Filamentive adds that the printed material does have less impact resistance than standard PETg, but has displayed a better tensile strength.

“Tridea provides an innovative and wholly novel means of utilizing waste, allowing us to multiply the lifespan of consumables by considering its lifecycle pre-consumer-consumer-post-consumer,” added Philippe Merillet, CEO & co-founder of Tridea.

ONE PET can be ordered from Filamentive (through its UK distributor 3DGBIRE) or from its various resellers. The filament, available in seven colours and in 1.75 or 2.85 mm diameters, is currently on sale for £19.99 per 750 g spool.
