The situation in African countries may already be much worse than imagined

As a result of 3dpbm’s call for help to AM companies providing resources to help fight COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Zahid Fedial, an ER Doctor at the Aljawda hospital in Sudan, reached out to ask for support with respirators. The crisis in the African nation seems to be already much worse than thought. Africa had so far appeared to be somewhat immune to the spread of the virus but it seems that statistics may have been dramatically affected by lack of testing.

At the moment, the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Sudan counter has registered 1 person (deceased) who has contracted the disease. However, Dr. Fedial told us that several people have been hit by COVID-19 and he was one of the first recorded cases—first suspected then confirmed—so he has been in quarantine for two weeks with 4 more days to go.

COVID-19 Sudan

“I can say without a doubt that we are in desperate need of those 3D printed ventilators designs and devices—we don’t have enough resources in our ICU and we certainly will not be able to cope with the with numbers of patients that are expected to arrive, which could spell for disaster.”

Dr. Fedial asked to provide more detail about what parts and equipment could actually be 3D printed on location and what materials are necessary. “Please indicate what masks, ventilators, and other medical devices that could help us fighting COVID-19” he said, “I will try to reach business owners.. appropriate facilities and the authorities so these parts can be manufactured and freely disturbed to local hospitals in need”.

If you can provide support with 3D models and/or expertise and parts, please reach out to info@3dpbm.com or register on the dedicated forum.
