This week, the additive manufacturing industry carefully restarted its physical event calendar with the launch of TCT Asia 2020, which has brought together companies from across the Asian AM market in China to showcase their latest technologies. Farsoon Technologies, a leading China-based developer of AM systems, took the opportunity to introduce a range of new 3D printing systems. Earlier this week, we covered the launch of its new Flight 252P polymer 3D printer series and now the company has unveiled a new large-frame metal AM system, the FS621M.

The large-frame metal AM system was developed by Farsoon in cooperation with Falcontech, a manufacturing service provider in the aerospace sector. In the printer’s development, both companies were focused on a few key elements, namely, an extended build cylinder volume and maximum productivity per laser. The FS621M has one of the largest build volumes of metal laser sintering systems on the market: 620 x 620 mm with a vertical axis of 1.1 meters. At this scale, Farsoon says new metal AM applications will open up in aerospace, as well as in oil and gas and other industries.

The new system comes with a few options: users can opt for a powerful single 1000W laser or for four 500W lasers, which unlock faster production rates. The system is also equipped with a dynamic 3-axis scanning system, advanced build process controls and real-time recoating monitoring. Like all of Farsoon’s 3D printing systems, the FS621M is based on an open platform, enabling users to develop materials and tailor process parameters.

The FS621M also features an integrated filter module with a secondary circulating system and a dual-station filter design. This system allows for filters to be exchanged without interrupting the printing process. The printers also share a common powder container design for the powder handling process, which is used during loading, unloading and sieving. These containers are fully-sealed and facilitate transportation between the various stations, as well as safe storage for metal powders. Farsoon says: “This partially closed powder system allows for the capability of continuous feeding of powder to the build while retaining the ability to easily exchange and monitor powder quality.”

Farsoon’s new FS621M system will be an integral part of Falcontech’s Super AM Factory, which aims to be operating a total of 50 Farsoon printers for scaled production of parts. Falcontech revealed its plans for the Super AM Factory recently, stating its intention to buy and install 20 Farsoon metal printers by the end of the year. The new large-format system jointly developed by the companies will give Falcontech an edge for aerospace applications that require scale.

According to Farsoon, seven FS621M systems have been installed among aerospace and large-scale manufacturing customers that are focusing on large-volume fabrication, batch production and the development of industrial powder materials such as titanium alloys, aluminum alloys, nickel-based superalloys and stainless steels.
