# Equinor EVP Hege Skryseth showcases RoboWAAM printer

[Equinor](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/equinor/), in collaboration with[ Industrial AM in Mo i Rana](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/industrial-am/), has ushered in a revolutionary phase of additive manufacturing by unveiling the RoboWAAM system from [WAAM3D](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/waam3d-ltd/), Norway's first-of-its-kind large-scale metal 3D printer. Installed in Mo i Rana, this cutting-edge machine represents a step toward sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective industrial practices.

The RoboWAAM is a large-scale 3D printer capable of producing metal parts that are bigger than a human. It produces intricate and robust metal components with precision, utilizing advanced WAAM metal 3D printing technology. Future plans for the machine include the use of scrap metal as raw material, enhancing its potential for sustainability. The system is versatile and is particularly well-suited for repairing and redesigning industrial parts or producing on-demand components for critical infrastructure.

With the RoboWAAM Equinor and Industrial AM expect to dramatically reduce lead times by eliminating the need for months of waiting for replacement parts, as it enables on-demand local manufacturing. The cost savings are substantial, as the machine cuts expenses associated with production and global transportation. In terms of environmental impact, the RoboWAAM significantly lowers the carbon footprint of manufacturing by reducing material waste and minimizing the need for long-distance shipping.

Under the traditional process, identifying a broken part during an inspection leads to a series of steps that include reporting the damage, ordering a replacement part, waiting for international shipping, and finally installing the part. This entire process can take months or even years and incurs substantial costs. Using the RoboWAAM, Equinor streamlines the process. Once a broken part is identified, and local additive manufacturing facilities can be used to print and install the part within days or weeks, significantly improving efficiency and reducing downtime.

The installation of RoboWAAM is a direct result of collaborations between key players in Norway’s industrial ecosystem. Industrial AM in Mo i Rana—a joint venture between MOMEK Robotics, Testpartner, and Kunnskapsparken Helgeland—played a critical role in the project. Additionally, Aker BP and Equinor actively contributed to establishing Norway’s additive manufacturing value chain. This joint effort highlights the importance of partnerships in driving innovation.

The development of local manufacturing capabilities through the RoboWAAM system marks a critical step in enhancing Norway’s industrial resilience. By reducing dependency on global supply chains and supporting a circular economy, this innovation bolsters the nation’s industrial value chain and secures its competitiveness in the global market. The next steps for RoboWAAM 3 and similar technologies involve scaling up their applications across multiple sectors. Research and innovation are ongoing to explore alternative raw materials, including sustainable options, to further enhance their impact. Additionally, Norway is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable industrial solutions, aiming to export its expertise and technology globally.
