# EOS sets science-based targets to reach net-zero by 2045

Within the largely sustainability-focused additive manufacturing industry, powder-bed fusion leader [EOS](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/eos/) has established itself as a [leader in responsible manufacturing](https://www.voxelmatters.com/responsible-am-an-incredible-opportunity/), setting ambitious targets and taking various measures to improve its overall carbon footprint. As the company says: "responsible Manufacturing is our 'North Star', the guiding constant we always look towards and be reminded of our purpose." Now, in the leadup to World Environment Day on June 5, the company has revealed its recently-approved science-based targets (SBT) that will enable it to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

Science-backed targets are approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), a corporate action organization founded by CDP, the United National Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, the World Wide Fund for Nature and the We Mean Business Coalition. The aim of the initiative is to develop standards and guides that will allow companies to set emissions targets that are aligned with the Paris Agreement and the goal of reaching net-zero by 2050 latest.

The emissions targets laid out by EOS are based on SBTi's Net-Zero Standard (set against a 2022 base year) and include the following:

42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions by 2030

25% absolute reduction in Scope 3 CO2e emissions by 2030

90% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions by 2040

90% absolute reduction in Scope 3 CO2e emissions by 2045

For context, Scope 1 emissions are greenhouse gases emitted directly by an organization (i.e. sources the company owns or controls directly); Scope 2 emissions are indirect (i.e. the company's purchase of electricity, heat, cooling); and Scope 3 emissions are life cycle emissions (i.e. emissions generated upstream and downstream of the value chain).

To attain these ambitious emissions reduction targets, EOS has developed a roadmap that includes the electrification of the company's car fleet, transitioning to renewable electricity across EOS facilities, developing more sustainable materials (like its [100% recycled AlSi10Mg](https://www.voxelmatters.com/eos-takes-major-step-toward-greener-am-with-100-recycled-alsi10mg/)) and boosting the efficiency of systems and processes.

EOS' responsible manufacturing ethos is based on a PPP approach (planet, people, performance), a holistic approach that aims to ensure sustainability is being addressed on all fronts. For example, in early 2024 the company implemented the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) to ensure that its direct suppliers were meeting social and environmental standards. Other strategies by the company to understand and improve its ecological impact include material LCAs, improving material efficiency, setting high energy standards at its facilities and more.
