EOS readies for new EOS M 300 launch

Successor to M 290 expected to debut in September in time for fall shows

Metal AM magazine was the first – and only media so far – to report on the upcoming EOS M 300, the successor to EOS’ best selling M 280 and M 290 metal 3D printers. According to Metal AM, the new system was teased during the recent EOS Technology Days at the company’s new headquarters in Krailling, Germany, on July 17-18.

The news is fairly significant since the M 280 and M 290 are among the most successful metal 3D printer models ever built, with possibly the largest global installed base today. The system is expected to make its official global debut at the upcoming IMTS show in Chicago (IL) next September. It is very likely that the European debut will take place at formnext next November. The system is currently scheduled for launching sometime in 2019.

Metal AM magazine reports that “the system will offer a productivity increase of 4-10 times that offered by the EOS M 290 through the use of four lasers (currently only available on M 400 model). The new design also offers full field overlap with four scanners, meaning that lasers can reach all spots on the build plate and full flexibility is possible with regards to build orientation.”

The EOS M 300 also features a gas flow optimized build chamber to ensure part reliability. This new gas flow design is will reduce the risk of condensate and ensure a strong flow of gas through the top and bottom of the build chamber, efficiently clearing smoke and debris generated during processing. Ensuring part reliability is key to EOS’ current focus on final part production, which also results in augmented automation and integration of the M 300 in current and future digital additive factories.

Thus the system will support the EOS Shared Modules concept, in which manual or automated peripheral modules and transport logistics supply several EOS metal AM system. Set-up, unpacking, transportation and sieving actions are going to be increasingly carried out independent of, and parallel to, the AM build process.

In this regard, Metal AM magazine also quoted Rüttermann, Director of Product Management at EOS, as he explained that “the EOS M 300 “is a response to customer demand for something close to the well-established EOS M 290, but scalable for a high volume production factory setting.”

One more very interesting element disclosed during the event is that EOS currently has an installed base of more than 3,000 systems around the world. While it took roughly 20 years to bring the first 1,000 systems into the market, EOS has installed the latest 1,000 of its AM systems at customer facilities just over the past two to three years, according to Thomas Weitlaner, Director Business Development.
