EOS launches new EOS M 290-2 400W metal AM system

EOS, the leading supplier of responsible manufacturing solutions, introduced the newest member of the EOS M 290 family, the EOS M 290-2 400W, growing the M 290 family of metal additive manufacturing (AM) systems to three, and setting a new productivity and quality standard for metal serial production.

Based on the time-tested EOS M 290 and developed through EOS’ AMCM group, the newest EOS M 290-2 system boasts two (2) 400-watt lasers with full-field overlap and is compatible with the existing EOS M 290 process parameter sets: same focus and beam quality.

The dual-head EOS M 290-2 laser set-up is equipped with several key features. These include optimized laminar gas flow, ensuring consistent material properties. Additionally, it offers a build volume of 250x250x325mm (9.85 x 9.85 x 12.8in), providing ample space for printing. The system also features a digital scanner with active cooling, capable of speeds up to 7.0 m/s (23 ft./s). Furthermore, it boasts process quality and a material library comparable to the EOS M 290 single-field configuration.

“While not always discussed publicly, many of the biggest and most widely known production applications in the history of metal AM have been underpinned by the EOS M 290,” said Monica Smith, EOS metal product line manager. “The heritage of the EOS M 290 family of systems – Smith added – dates back two decades with nearly 2,000 M 290s installed globally, which speaks to the popularity of the system and makes this line of AM technology perhaps the most adopted system in the world. The new EOS M 290-2 has a lot to live up to, and we are both proud and confident about the next generation of metal AM production stories that will be written using this system.”

With varying market demands, the new EOS M 290-2 will be offered alongside the EOS M 290, as well as the recently introduced EOS M 290 1kW — developed for organizations that typically leverage copper and copper alloys for applications like heat exchangers and inductors.

An early adopter of the EOS M 290-2, Nordic-based AMEXCI piloted the new system and through the increased productivity of dual lasers, attained a 76% reduction in cost-per-part for the tested application against the original EOS M 290 build.

The part quality is also best-in-class, and the integration of the Smart Fusion & OT is a game-changer and has opened doors for us to completely new customer cases and geometries,” said Johannes Karjalainen, AMEXCI Managing Director.

The EOS M 290-2 400W will be available for purchase beginning in the summer of 2024 through EOS and its authorized partners.
