EOS and GKN Powder Metallurgy team up for metal AM

GKN Powder Metallurgy has just announced a partnership with metal 3D printing company EOS at Formnext 2018. Working together, the companies have reportedly developed a new, high-productivity laser metal 3D printing process that is faster and cheaper than existing solutions on the market. The ultimate aim of the collaboration is to accelerate the industrialization of metal AM.

According to GKN Powder Metallurgy, the jointly developed metal AM process will have 70% faster production times and enable manufacturers to cut costs by up to 50%—no small feat.

“We’re thinking differently about what’s possible in manufacturing; metal 3D printing and rapid prototyping have become a formidable part of our business,” commented Peter Oberparleiter, CEO of GKN Powder Metallurgy. “This collaboration makes laser metal 3D printing a viable long-term solution for manufacturers across the board that require fast delivery turnaround and could benefit from the high degree of design freedom that comes with Laser 3D printing. Our customers will be able to produce higher quality parts faster than ever before, with absolutely no tooling.”

GKN Powder EOS

Through the strategic partnership, the companies will leverage GKN’s advanced metal powder, EOS StainlessSteel 316L VPro, and EOS’ laser metal AM technology and expertise. These two key elements, they say, will enable them to unlock new production levels and lower costs than before. One of the aims of working together is to facilitate the additive manufacturing of high-performance parts for end-use applications in the automotive and industrial sectors.

“In order to expand our foot print in the automotive industry, we were looking for a strong partner with a high level of expertise in the field of steels and typical industry grade materials combined with a proven track record of further industrializing technologies together with customer applications,” said Dr. Adrian Keppler, CEO at EOS. “We found a perfect partner in GKN Powder Metallurgy. Based on this partnership, our customers will benefit from higher build speeds and lower material costs resulting in significantly optimized cost per part. This is going to lower the entry barrier and will enable completely new application fields.”

Earlier this week, GKN Powder Metallurgy announced another partnership with Nordic logistics company PostNord AB to facilitate the deployment and delivery of products and parts within the Nordic region.

EOS, for its part, has had some of the biggest news we’ve seen this Formnext with the announcement of its new LaserProFusion AM technology for polymers, with print speeds up to ten times faster than competing technologies.
