# EOS brings AM expertise to MAT‑H2 consortium on hydrogen energy

As a clean burning fuel, hydrogen represents a promising and more sustainable future for the energy sector. Despite its benefits, however, the advancement and adoption of hydrogen as an energy source has remained limited to due challenges related to producing, storing, and transporting the element. In particular, equipment used in hydrogen environments must be made from materials with specific and demanding properties that can withstand corrosion and embrittlement.

In an effort to advance hydrogen as an energy source, an array of industry players and research organizations have banded together to form the MAT-H2 consortium. This consortium, which is part of Finland-based Wärtsilä’s WISE program (Wide and Intelligent Sustainable Energy), includes Finnish companies Neste, Nordic Tank, and Teknos; steel specialists SSAB, Bumax, and SP Stainless; research partners VTT and University of Oulu; and—most relevant to us—additive manufacturing company [EOS](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/eos/). 

By combining their knowledge and resources, the MAT-H2 members aim to develop hydrogen-ready materials and technologies that will enable the clean energy source to be adopted more broadly. EOS specifically will contribute its expertise in metal material development and additive manufacturing.

Through the MAT-H2 consortium, EOS is helping bridge the gap between research and industrial implementation by contributing expertise in metal AM, material characterization, and application-driven development.”

Ultimately, the consortium aims to advance hydrogen applications to unlock more sustainable energy and decarbonization opportunities. Unlike fossil fuels, which generate carbon dioxide emissions, when hydrogen is consumed it just generates water, making it a clean alternative that could power transport, electrical grids, manufacturing, and more. Developing hydrogen compatible materials is therefore essential to scaling this energy resource. 

AM technology is also playing a role elsewhere in hydrogen related research. For instance, [Lithoz's ceramic AM](https://www.voxelmatters.com/fivefold-power-to-weight-gain-in-lightweight-hydrogen-engines-using-lithoz-ceramic-3d-printing/) is being used to explore alternative architectural approaches for hydrogen propulsion systems at the Technical University of Denmark. At the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), ceramic AM is also integral in a pilot line dedicated to the manufacturing of [solid oxide cells (SOC)](https://www.voxelmatters.com/irec-launches-advanced-hydrogen-technology-manufacturing-plant/).
