Elementum 3D and SLM Solutions collaborate to offer new advanced materials for SLM

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.

A newly established collaboration between SLM Solutions and Elementum 3D, a Colorado-based advanced AM materials developer and provider, will bring access to new powders beyond standard AM products to adopters of SLM Solutions’ metal PBF systems.

While SLM Solutions already offers several powders based on standard alloys, Elementum 3D is an expert in producing advanced metals, ceramics, and composites, setting it apart from other powder developers.

“It’s imperative to provide every manufacturer with the option to adopt the disruptive power of additive manufacturing and having the right materials available that will meet their specific needs is the first step,” said Dr. Jacob Nuechterlein, president and founder of Elementum 3D.

Elementum 3D and SLM Solutions collaborate to provide new metal powders Elementum 3D’s offer is based on three core areas: Advanced Metals, Ceramics and Advanced Composites. Metals include niche materials such as refractory metals (tantalum, tungsten) as well as shape memory, superelastic, and superplastic alloys, high-strength and high specific strength alloys, hard and wear-resistant alloys as well as corrosion-resistant alloys

Elementum 3D’s innovative technology allows 3D printing of advanced ceramic materials without the need to fire them after printing. High-performance ceramics composed of carbides, borides, oxides and nitrides can be printed with properties including wear, corrosion, temperature, and oxidation resistance. Possible applications include wear-resistant parts, cutting tools, armor, high-temperature and oxidation-resistant refractory components and aerospace applications. The area of Advanced Composites is focused on developing source materials for metal matrix composites (MMCs) and ceramic-metal composites (cermets).

Industries such as aerospace, space, automotive, and defense have continued to seek out metal AM as a viable option to advance application innovation. Still, the limited diversity of metal materials, especially aluminum, has traditionally blocked those initiatives. Elementum 3D makes it possible to leap over those material hurdles and clear the way for modernizing application development.

Recently, Elementum 3D implemented an SLM®280 system to test and define new powder development.  “It’s great to have partners like Elementum 3D that focus on meeting the extended needs and desires of our customer base,” said Charlie Grace, Chief Sales Officer at SLM Solutions.

Modern additive manufacturing is defined by a freedom that allows users to push and expand what’s possible. Elementum 3D and SLM Solutions have embraced this mindset through the continuous development of industrial machines and materials.
