Ecogenesis Biopolymers has released its new genTPU filament, a plant-based thermoplastic polyurethane designed for fused deposition modeling 3D printing. Available in 95A and 60D hardness and 1.75 mm diameter, the filament is formulated with Soleic TPU from Algenesis Labs and produced entirely in the United States.

The company states that genTPU offers the mechanical strength and flexibility expected from conventional polyurethane while delivering a significantly lower environmental footprint. The filament’s base polymer, Soleic, is derived from renewable plant sources and certified under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s BioPreferred Program.

Soleic TPU is the first fully biodegradable flexible TPU filament for 3D printing. The company reports a carbon footprint reduction of 77.8% to 83.8% compared with petroleum-based alternatives. Laboratory tests following a modified ASTM D5338 composting standard showed 27% biodegradation over 180 days at 45°C under CO₂ respirometry, marking a measurable improvement in flexible polymer breakdown.

Ecogenesis states that its TPUs are specially designed to break down completely in nature, including oceans, without leaving behind tiny plastic pieces. The material maintains its mechanical integrity during use and degrades only at the end of its lifecycle.

The filament is currently offered in four colors—natural (clear), black, gray, and white—with U.S. availability now and European distribution expected by summer 2026. A distribution partnership is planned for announcement in the first quarter of 2026.
