DuPont introduces 3D printing filaments reinforced with carbon, glass

DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers, a global business unit of the DowDuPont Specialty Products Division, has introduced new 3D printing filaments at Formnext 2018.

Using the “ultralow shrinkage technology” of DuPont’s Zytel specialty nylons for 3D printing, the new grades address the industry needs for stiffer and stronger materials. According to DuPont, the materials are comparable to existing reinforced injection molding grades, but do not compromise easy printability, smoothness and surface quality.

The two new grades, which will be available as of January 2019, include a glass-reinforced polyamide and a carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide. According to DuPont, both grades allow users to achieve greater design freedom, lightweighting and reduced product development cycles, allowing for rapid prototyping, easier part production, tooling and customization.

“To follow these trends, our industrial customers need 3D printing materials that offer similar formulation, mechanical [properties] and chemical properties as our well-known injection moulding grades,” said Ernst Poppe, New Business Development Manager at DuPont. “These new glass- and carbon-reinforced 3D filaments are a new step in that direction to help the industry move toward cost-efficient, automated and larger-scale production.”

The two new grades are:

  • Zytel 3D12G30FL BK309, a black heat-stabilized 30 percent glass-reinforced polyamide with a modulus of 4-5GPA and a heat deflection temperature of >150 C, resistant to most solvents, cleaning agents, automotive fluids and fuels at room temperature.
  • Zytel 3D10C20FL BK544, a black 20 percent carbon fiber reinforced polyamide for lightweight components with a modulus of 4-5GPA and a heat deflection temperature of >150 C, resistant to most solvents, cleaning agents, automotive fluids and fuels at room temperature.

Both are being showcased at Formnext 2018 in Frankfurt, Germany. To show the quality of the materials, a live printing demonstration is being carried out on X400 and X500 3D printers made by German RepRap, a partner of DuPont.
