# Duondolo, a modern rocking chair made using LFAM 3D printing

When one thinks of a rocking chair, one generally thinks of a creaky wooden chair sat on a porch or in the corner of a nursery. Not designer Valentina Bottani, who worked with design brand Osmotica Design to create a contemporary rocking chair with the help of [Caracol's](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/caracol-studio/) large-format 3D printing technology. The half-moon-shaped chair, called Duondolo, shows—once again—the creative furniture design possibilities made possible thanks to AM.

Bottani, an up-and-coming Italian designer and graduate from the Politecnico di Milano, teamed up with Osmotica Design to reinterpret the rocking chair as a relational object. The result of this reinterpretation is a curved seat that instead of rocking back and forth, rocks side to side. The large-scale piece was presented at [Milan Design Week 2026](https://www.voxelmatters.com/dont-miss-the-best-3d-printing-installations-at-milan-design-week-2026/) a couple of months ago, where visitors could try out the dynamic seat. As production partner Caracol puts it: the 3D printed Duondolo chair is "an invitation to rediscover balance, play, and human connection."

A big part of what made the chair's realization possible was 3D printing. Without it, Bottani would have been limited by factors like tooling costs, inflexible production schedules, structural compromises, and more. With large-format AM, however, the designer was able to create with a high level of freedom, without the constraints of traditional production.

The chair, which has dimensions of 2300 × 1050 × 1230 mm, was 3D printed using Caracol's Heron AM platform, a robotic LFAM technology with versatile applications, from furniture and design to industrial and aerospace. Caracol's Heron AM technology, compatible with composite thermoplastics, printed the entire chair structure in 18 hours using a recycling PETG (rPETG) with 30% glass fiber reinforcement. This material was selected by the partners for its eco-friendly characteristics as well as its material properties, which met the structural requirements for the large rocking chair.

"Beyond sustainability, the project demonstrates the economic viability of small-batch and custom production: no molds, no overproduction, a single unique object manufactured to exact specification in 18 hours," said Caracol. "For studios and designers seeking to push formal boundaries while staying true to responsible making, Caracol’s technology makes it possible."

Caracol's Heron AM platform has been used for various creative applications, including a [large-scale public art installation in Colorado in 2025](https://www.voxelmatters.com/cross-industry-dynamics-uses-caracol-am-system-for-large-scale-dia-de-los-muertos-public-art/), a unique retail space for Australian retailer Hardy Brothers; and [the world's largest 3D printed structure by volume](https://www.voxelmatters.com/dubai-restaurant-myata-breaks-guinness-world-record-for-largest-3d-printed-structure/) for the Myata Platinum restaurant in Dubai.
