# DMG Mori to showcase scalable metal AM workflow at Formnext 2025

At Formnext 2025, DMG Mori will highlight its expanded portfolio of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, demonstrating how its powder-bed and direct energy deposition (DED) systems can be optimized for serial production of metal parts. The company plans to present its LASERTEC SLM and DED platforms as part of a broader strategy to integrate AM into complete, automated process chains.

Central to this effort is the [LASERTEC 30 SLM third-generation platform](https://www.voxelmatters.com/dmg-mori-releases-lasertec-30-slm-3rd-gen/), which introduces an interchangeable build chamber designed to eliminate cooling-time bottlenecks. The modular chamber system allows operators to swap out completed builds for pre-prepared ones, significantly reducing machine downtime and shielding gas usage. Preparation and powder handling are performed offline under inert gas conditions, preserving the protective atmosphere and enhancing safety.

The new rePLUG FLEX module, also being unveiled at Formnext, offers a simplified and cost-effective solution for powder management. Unlike the standard rePLUG module, FLEX operates without a closed powder circuit and supports economical material changes, particularly for low-usage metals.

## Hybrid AM with subtractive integration

In parallel, DMG Mori will demonstrate its LASERTEC DED hybrid systems, which combine additive deposition with subtractive capabilities such as milling, turning, and grinding — all within a single setup. Part of the company’s MX machining transformation strategy, the six-in-one platform includes preheating, powder-nozzle AM, 3D scanning, and multiple finishing operations.

The ability to alternate between additive and subtractive processes enables the production of complex, multi-material parts with custom surface properties such as corrosion resistance or chemical durability. Preheating reduces residual stress and prevents cracking, while integrated 3D laser scanning with false color imaging supports non-contact quality control. Optional blue laser capabilities extend inspection to highly reflective materials like copper and enable graded material transitions.

## Closed-loop monitoring and process control

The LASERTEC 30 SLM platform also integrates DMG Mori’s CELOS X interface with easyAM, enabling intuitive machine control and process transparency. A camera-based monitoring system inspects the powder bed after each layer, scanning for defects and visualizing results through heat maps and anomaly scoring. Operators can overlay CAD layer data onto real-time camera images, allowing functional assessments of detected irregularities.

The machine's build volume of 325 x 325 x 400 mm is designed for mid-sized industrial components. To illustrate the end-to-end production workflow, DMG Mori will demonstrate the manufacture of a cobot end effector for its MATRIS Light tending system live at Formnext.

With a rigid cast structure derived from the company’s milling and turning platforms, the new SLM machine emphasizes thermal stability and repeatability — aligning metal AM more closely with established production standards.
