DMG MORI releases LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Gen

DMG MORI, a leading global industrial manufacturing company, has unveiled the LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Gen at its Open House in Bielefeld, Germany. This new generation features a quad laser full overlap working area and a build volume of 325 x 325 x 400mm – enhancing its predecessor’s capabilities and meeting customer demands.

The LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Gen’s structure incorporates castings, a hallmark of DMG MORI’s milling and turning machines, ensuring optimal rigidity and manufacturing predictability. While there are no dynamic forces from axis movement, the machine compensates for inevitable thermal expansion. The isolated Floating Process Chamber allows expansion without affecting the optics – mounted on the rigid casting Gantry Frame – ensuring consistent distance calibration between the optics and the powder bed.

A notable feature is the rePLUG system, an automated powder material processing unit, that facilitates quick material changes and reduces downtime between build jobs. This system, already favored in aerospace and medical industries, operates under an inert gas atmosphere – minimizing oxidation, moisture build-up, and operator exposure. The LASERTEC 30 SLM 3rd Gen’s design allows easy cleaning and quick material transitions, broadening its application range.

For the first time, DMG MORI enables quick build container exchange – improving machine efficiency by eliminating cooling wait times. The build container and working area covers maintain the inert gas atmosphere, allowing immediate job commencement. Additionally, surface anomalies in the powder bed are monitored via a camera, and a bi-directional re-coater with collision protection minimizes downtime by detaching upon contact with protrusions.

The inert gas flow system ensures consistent laminar flow over the powder bed, while a secondary gas flow prevents residue buildup on the protective glass. This system is monitored by a secondary camera – alerting the operator of any issues – and is supported by additional lighting for inspection and cleaning.

DMG MORI emphasizes usability and ergonomics, particularly reducing operator contact with the powder. The CELOS X operating environment guides operators through essential tasks such as cleaning safety glass, refilling powder, and performing daily maintenance – promoting safe and efficient procedures on the shop floor.
