Desktop Metal is ramping up its production of the office-friendly Studio System for metal 3D printing to meet growing demand. The updated production capability is now allowing the Massachusetts-based company to ship out 550 Studio Systems per year. The increased production also means that new orders made from within the United States and Canada can be fulfilled within just two weeks.

The Studio System is Desktop Metals’ first product release, which marked a significant step in the company’s goal of providing an affordable, desktop metal 3D printing solution. Over the last six months, the Studio System has been used by businesses around the globe to produce over 8,000 parts, ranging from functional prototypes of extruder nozzles and shock absorber pistons to low volume production of gears and motor mounts.

According to Desktop Metal, customers have leveraged the Studio System metal 3D printing technology to reduce costs by as much as 90% compared to machining and selective laser melting (SLM) and to speed up production significantly, from months or weeks to mere days.

“Leading companies, such as Ford, Google’s ATAP, Goodyear, BMW and Protolabs, are now benefitting from the ease of use and accessibility provided by the Studio System,” commented Ric Fulop, CEO and Co-Founder of Desktop Metal. “To meet continued demand, we have scaled up production capacity to allow us to deliver complete systems for fast installation.”

The Studio System is a three-part solution comprising a 3D printer, a debinder and furnace. In combination with Desktop Metal’s cloud-based software, the three-part technology enables the seamless production of complex metal parts, from design to final component. The system is also modular, meaning that one furnace unit can support up to five 3D printers; the large furnace size can process in batches for high throughput.

Perhaps the biggest differentiator of Desktop Metal’s technology is that it is office-friendly. Unlike many industrial metal 3D printing systems, which require dedicated facilities to operate in, the Studio System does not require external ventilation and prevents exposure to solvents meaning it can be used in an office, lab or shop.

With the accelerated production of its Studio System 3D printer, it will be interesting to see how Desktop Metal’s sales are impacted. The announcement follows the closing of a recent investment round in which the company secured $160 million, bringing the company’s total investments to $438 million, the most of any private 3D printing company in history.
