Desktop Metal ships and installs first ever Production System

The system is being delivered but can it really deliver?

While it is all fine and good that Desktop Metal just upped production capabilities for its office-friendly Studio System, what many analysts and industry professionals are really waiting to see is whether the Production System can truly deliver what its namesake suggests. We may have to wait a while longer to see if it can deliver, but what we do know is that it is now being delivered.

With a post on its social media accounts, the company revealed that that “the world’s fastest metal printer, delivering the lowest cost per part, is now officially in the field”. Desktop Metal has just shipped and installed the first Production System with an early Pioneer customer, a yet undisclosed Fortune 500 company.

We expect that that recipient is an automotive company however it could be any one of the partners that have financed Desktop Metal’s activities so far, including Koch Disruptive Technologies, Google Ventures, BMW, Lowe’s and Ford – or perhaps even an aerospace manufacturer.

Powered by Single Pass Jetting technology, the Production System is more than 100x faster than quad-laser metal printers, 4x faster than the closest binder jetting alternative and up to 20x lower cost-per-part than today’s metal 3D printing systems. If the Production System lives up to these premises and promises, it can benefit companies in an unprecedented number of industrial manufacturing segments.
