# Designer Anika Greyling’s 3D prints embrace irregularity

Anika Greyling is part of a growing cohort of young designers that are using [3D printing](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/3d-printed-consumer-products/design/) as a medium for art and design objects. A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, she continually explores the intersection between technology, material, and sustainability in her work. This has culminated in her most recent project, "Layered Lines", a series of 3D printed objects that play with the unpredictability of 3D printing and the use of recycled polymer materials.

Typically, when one sets about 3D printing a product, the aim is consistency and reproducibility. In other words, the idea is for the final printed part to be practically identical to the 3D model it is based on. Greyling's "Layered Lines" subverts this, introducing variability in the form of parameter changes to create new, less predictable outcomes.

In this work, the designer uses a large-scale extrusion 3D printing technology to build myriad forms—both freeform and on substrates—from recycled thermoplastic. By making manual changes to print settings like fan speed and extrusion rate, she has achieved styles that evoke melting or draping.

As she writes on [her website](https://anikagreyling.com/Layered-Lines): "Layered lines explores the boundaries of what is possible with large-scale 3D printing, where I developed techniques such as draping, spanning and stacking the printed recycled plastic into molds. I was able to develop a series of objects with intricate patterns and textures. These patterns result from manually changed settings during the prints, allowing gravity to interact with the material, how it stretches and deforms before it hardens."

For Greyling, this approach to large-scale extrusion 3D printing means that there is a way to create unique pieces based on a repeatable process. As she says: "These techniques have the potential to be scaled up for future application in furniture design, or even architecture."

In a [video](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/K2fXWs1kCSM) demonstration of the designer's process, printed waste is reprocessed into printable pellets before being re-extruded into new forms. The printing itself was reportedly carried out in collaboration with vanPlestik, an Amsterdam-based design agency that focuses on circular 3D printing and has even developed its own 3D printer that uses plastic waste as a raw material.
