Barilla 3D Printed SMART PASTA contest winners announced

Although it is probably still quite far from commercial applications, leading global pasta manufacturer Barilla continues to explore 3D printing of pasta. ONe way is through explorative designs: the SMART PASTA open innovation design contest launched by Desall in collaboration with Barilla is now showing off the top designs and providing some additional information.

The competition proved a great success with 680 designers involved in the project from different countries in the world. The great majority of submissions came from Italy (37,3%), followed by the United States (14,1%) and Mexico (13,7%). Many universities around the world shared the competition with their students, including the New School of New York, Purdue University, Savannah College of Art and Design, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and UDEM among others.

The competition was in itself very appealing: the idea of designing new shapes of pasta to be 3D printed with an exclusive 3D printer specifically designed for the purpose introduced a series of challenges that arose the interest of the participants, that interpreted the request from different perspectives and with great creativity.

Altogether the contest received almost 1200 projects, but three most of all managed to convince Barilla of their uniqueness and we are finally able to show them.

1st Award – Andreas Anedda – Turbine

Turbine are a revisited version of the world-wide famous fusilli.
The spiral shape changes its wide to give to the pasta a general configuration similar to gnocchi, but it keeps the featured blades that allow sauce to be captured, creating a whirlpool of tasty bites.

Andreas Anedda is a 26 years old Italian Designer. His passion for designing objects starts when he was just a kid, he was a nightmare for his parents, disassembling and mounting again any object that he found interesting.  During his youth he developed a passion for drawing, which led him to move back to Italy from France to study Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano. There he could finally follow his dream to become a designer and found a very stimulating environment that helped to transform his passion into a profession.
After graduating in Design and Engineering he started his career as a freelance, a risky but satisfying choice that allowed him to develop his own style and requires him to get the best of himself to become a better designer every day. Nowadays he designs very different products, from toys to furniture and tries to take any chances to design something new, learning from the experience of the companies he works for.

2nd Award – Cornelius Comanns – Water Lily

Water Lily is a simple and beautiful shaped pasta that is inspired by nature. It can float on soup and can be loaded with different ingredients. The size can be varied for different effects. For example one large lily floating on top of a bowl of soup or a group of small ones for a plate.

Cornelius Comanns was born in 1984 in Regensburg in Germany. He started his creative development by attending a broad artistic education at the ‘Akademie Regensburg’ (academy of arts). He then moved to Munich to start an Industrial Design course at the University of Applied Sciences, which he finished with the best bachelor thesis of his year.

While studying in Munich he had the opportunity to develop projects in cooperation with companies like AUDI, Bang&Olufsen, Ingo Maurer, Nils Holger Moormann and EADS.
He also spent some months in each case at Pininfarina in Torino and the Art.Lebedev Studio in Moscow, working as an intern.
In 2012 Cornelius Comanns graduated from the Product Design course of the Royal College of Art in London.
Already as a student he won numerous design awards and his work was published widely in printed and online media.

3rd Award – Marco Ferrarin – PIGNABARILLA

SMART PASTA “inspired by nature

the thickness of its walls is perfect for cooking”

Marco Ferrario was born in Bolzano, among the Dolomytes, the most beautiful mountains in the world. His design draws inspiration from nature that he observes with attention and that he profoundly respects. He likes to understand the small natural things as pine cones and flowers and tries to replicate them to create objects, like jewels and accessories. He is also passionate about homeware design and creates versatile and transformable objects, that open up many possibilities, so to let the final user freely interpret his works.
