# Custom made and recyclable: 3D printed acoustic wall art

[New Digital Craft](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/new-digital-craft/), a Heidelberg-based production studio, has embraced state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques to produce contemporary 3D printed objects that include digital stone reconstructions and artistic acoustic solutions.

Traditionally distinct as functions, acoustic insulation and design have often been thrown together in unsatisfying visual formats, with various limitations.

By combining digital craftsmanship with a sharp and modern aesthetic, NDC is using natural and recyclable substances to make acoustically-engineered wall coverings that eschew typical materials such as wood, plaster and textile.

Thanks to 3D printing, NDC is able to output fully customizable and unique wall modules that save on raw materials and resources, are flexible and can be moved and reinstalled. Traditional acoustic insulation is often mass produced, costly and with excess wastage – it’s also usually a permanent installation that cannot be adapted at a later stage. [It has previously been successfully 3D printed at scale](https://www.voxelmatters.com/aectual-launches-mass-customized-3d-printed-acoustic-panels/).

Another major benefit of the wall module series is the formation of shapes and forms that would otherwise be impossible via traditional production methods. By using 3D printing, the modules can be refined to the architectural and design requirements of a project, enabling full control over surface textures, colors and sizes.

The company also works with 3D printing in other architectural applications, with digital stone reconstruction a major focus.

Using a scan-to-production method, it can take precise digital capture of historical fittings and jambs, model them parametrically and then cast them in 3D printed molds. The use of cement-free, insulating [concrete](https://www.voxelmatters.com/zublin-and-instatiq-leverage-concrete-3d-printing-at-scale/) makes the process up to 40% cheaper than natural stone, and is faster and more sustainable.

NDC also has a product called OKAfree, which combines 3D printed glass inserts with insulating glass that is able to direct light and provide sun protection, as well as high-end bespoke concrete staircases that rely on state-of-the-art 3D printed formwork technologies to execute shapes with millimeter precision.
