# Croom Medical brings patient-specific implant manufacturing in-house

[Croom Medical](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/croom-precision-medical/) has begun producing patient-specific implants for orthopedic OEMs entirely within its own Limerick site, rather than routing the work through outside suppliers. The Irish company claimed the shift delivers a complete, inspected implant within days, compared with the weeks or months a multi-supplier chain can take.

With speed a clinical requirement for patient-specific implants, Croom Medical stated that routing work through a separate printer, machinist and finisher adds wait time and shipping; consolidating those steps at one site removes the handoffs. The arrangement is build-to-print: design, intellectual property and regulatory responsibility stay with the OEM, while Croom Medical manufactures to that specification and supplies the documentation needed for its regulatory filing.

Croom reported that the implants, produced in titanium, cobalt chrome and tantalum, suit complex, low-volume devices such as ankle implants, acetabular cups, interbody cages, revision cones, post-traumatic reconstruction devices and craniomaxillofacial implants.

## Capacity built on volume production

Croom reported that the new capability relies on the certifications and processes behind its higher-volume work: more than 40 years in orthopedic manufacturing, claimed annual output above 250,000 knee systems from an ISO 13485:2016-certified, FDA-registered facility, and additive manufacturing experience dating to around 2010, with more than 60,000 additive-manufactured implants produced to date.

Each material runs on its own machine to limit cross-contamination. Validated laser powder bed fusion processing covers Ti-6Al-4V Grade 23 and cobalt chrome, [tantalum runs through the company's TALOS platform](https://www.voxelmatters.com/croom-medical-launches-talos-platform-for-3d-printed-tantalum-implants/), and [porous lattice design runs through its Biofuse technology](https://www.voxelmatters.com/croom-medical-introduces-biofuse-3d-printed-lattice-technology-for-orthopedic-implants/).
