# Croom Medical breaks ground on $21.3m R&D production facility

[Croom Medical, a leading precision orthopedic implant manufacturer based in Limerick, Ireland](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/croom-precision-medical/), has broken ground on a state-of-the-art, €18 million ($21.3m) advanced manufacturing facility – the largest investment in the company’s 40-year history.

The Advanced Centre of Orthopaedic Technologies (ACOT) is the latest step in the business’s continual growth. Since 2021 its workforce has tripled to over 170, and the new 38,000 square foot premises will house research, development, and full-cycle production of orthopedic implants.

In the past year alone, Croom Medical has launched flagship technology platforms [TALOS, an innovative industry standard setting process for 3D printed tantalum components using advanced L-PBF](https://www.voxelmatters.com/croom-medical-launches-talos-platform-for-3d-printed-tantalum-implants/), and its [Biofuse 3D printed lattice – a L-PBF produced porous ingrowth technology for orthopedic implants](https://www.voxelmatters.com/croom-medical-introduces-biofuse-3d-printed-lattice-technology-for-orthopedic-implants/) which “allows fine-tuning of key parameters such as pore size, porosity, and coefficient friction to create optimal conditions for bone ingrowth and long-term fixation”.

ACOT has been designed to bring multiple manufacturing processes under one roof and provide a fully integrated production cycle for OEMs across shoulder, hip, knee, spine, trauma, and sports medicine product lines. 

From early design through to validated serial production, a reduction in supplier handoffs and compressing time to market for OEM partners is a key goal, and the company is framing ACOT as a response to structural shifts in the orthopedic device industry. 

“The industry is moving toward cementless fixation, robotic-assisted surgery, and additive [manufacturing] at scale,” stated CEO Patrick Byrnes. “That demands advanced technology, advanced surface finishing, and vertically integrated supply chains. ACOT is designed to achieve this.”

Electropolishing, anodising, vacuum furnace heat treatment, multi-material additive manufacturing, automated polishing and finishing, lights-out machining and grinding, and digital inspection will all be handled in the new facility, which will operate on solar power and be digitally connected across its production systems.

The company is yet to confirm an expected completion and inauguration date for ACOT.
