Creality launches multi-spool SpacePi X4 filament dryer
The new filament dryer, equipped with a host of automated functionalities, can dry up to four filament spools at once
Anyone who has experienced blobs, stringing or poor layer adhesion in FDM 3D printing will already know that a likely culprit is wet filament. Most thermoplastic filaments have hygroscopic properties (i.e. they absorb moisture from their environment), which can lead to all sorts of issues when said filament is melted and extruded onto the print bed. Proper filament storage and drying strategies are thus essential steps in a successful FDM 3D printing workflow, whether you’re a DIY maker or a production-scale 3D print farm. Creality, the company behind the popular Ender-3 FDM 3D printer series, is making it easier to ensure optimal filament quality with the new SpacePi X4 filament dryer.
The SpacePi X4 quite literally expands on Creality’s existing SpacePi filament drying system, making space for up to four filament spools at once and integrating a host of new features that enable users to get the most out of their filament. The system, which officially launched last month, is retailing for $199.
Key upgrades for optimized drying
Creality, which celebrated its tenth anniversary last year and has made a name for itself in the desktop 3D printing segment through its hardware and auxiliary solutions, emphasizes that the new SpacePi X4 integrates a number of key advancements that end users are sure to appreciate.
The first is a structure that includes dual independent heating chambers. This allows users to simultaneously dry four spools (two spools per chamber), even if the filaments require different drying settings. Each of the two heating chambers is equipped with its own PTC heater, which can reach up to 85°C (a higher range than other filament dryers in the system’s price range). In short, this means that users can dry high-temperature filaments like ABS or PA in one chamber, while also drying lower temperature filaments like PLA or PETG in the other.
The second key upgrade is a sealing system designed to keep moisture out of the drying chamber. Whereas most other filament drying solutions rely on manual moisture control, the SpacePi X4 keeps spools dry through its sealed structure as well as with functions like desiccant regeneration and a one-way valve design. On this front, another key feature of the filament dryer is its active venting, which expels moisture from the system without any user intervention, ultimately keeping filaments optimal to the point where they are fed into the 3D printer.
The new hardware also comes equipped with an industry-first smart user interface. Through the intuitive touchscreen, users can more easily set parameters for the drying chambers, including temperature and drying time. The UI also gives users the option to create their own drying profiles or access recommended drying profiles. There is also an auto drying function designed to keep filaments in top condition while stored in the system.
The benefits of SpacePi X4
Creality’s four-spool filament drying solution offers a number of benefits to users. Chief among them is a higher success rate for 3D prints. As we saw, many failures and defects in FDM 3D prints can be traced back to filament issues. By keeping filament good and dry, 3D printed models are less at risk of issues like blobbing, stringing and poor layer adhesion, which in turn saves users both time and money associated with wasted prints.
Another important benefit of using a filament dryer like the SpacePi X4 is that filaments will retain their optimal properties for longer. This is particularly important when working with engineering-grade filaments, whose material properties are essential to the functioning of 3D printed parts. By extending the lifespan of filament spools, users can make the most out of their material investment and not worry about filaments losing their quality over time.
The SpacePi X4 also unlocks benefits in terms of efficiency. Whereas single spool filament dryers can take a long time to process a variety of materials, the four-spool configuration lets users dry multiple filaments at once. For 3D print farms and high-volume production environments like 3D printing services, the ability to simultaneously dry four filament spools without the need for manual intervention can significantly boost productivity.
Notably, the SpacePi X4 is particularly advantageous for multi-color 3D printing setups, since up to four colors can be fed into a multi-color 3D printer, like the Creality Hi Combo (alternatively, each spool of filament can feed into one-of-four 3D printers for high-volume operations. On top of that, the platform has an intuitive interface that anyone from beginners to expert 3D printing users can navigate with ease.
“As the maker of the Ender-3 series (the world’s bestselling FDM printer), Creality has empowered millions of creators since 2014,” the company says. “The original SpacePi dryer earned a high rating across Amazon and Reddit communities for its reliability, driving the X4’s development. Backed by patents and a global R&D team, Creality continues to set industry benchmarks.”
With the launch of the SpacePi X4 3D printing filament dryer, Creality has indeed set a new standard for affordable filament drying that is both highly automated and ideal for users like schools and libraries, as well as production environments like 3D print farms. The hardware solution for 3D printing is now in stock and ready to ship. Additionally, Creality will be running a 25% off promotion from July 8 to 11, 2025, bringing the price of the SpacePi X4 down to $149.
