# CNPC Powder breaks ground on California facility

[CNPC Powder, a China-based supplier of metal powders for additive manufacturing](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/cnpc-powder/), has broken ground on a new production and research facility in California, marking the company's first manufacturing footprint in the United States. The 2,000-square-meter plant is scheduled to begin production in the first quarter of 2027.

The investment is driven by [growing demand from US manufacturers for domestic powder supply](https://www.voxelmatters.com/reinforcing-the-foundations-for-the-next-decade-of-growth-in-metal-am/). The company stated the facility would reduce delivery times from several weeks to a matter of days for many North American customers, while also providing on-site engineering support and greater supply chain visibility for applications in aerospace, automotive, medical, electronics, and industrial sectors.

“With this new manufacturing factory in California, we will fulfill a long-standing request from our US customers by providing them with even faster access to our alloys, along with personalized local technical support and greater supply chain control for critical applications in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, 3C, medical, energy, and industrial,” the company stated in a LinkedIn post.

## Production capabilities and materials

The facility will house up to six fully automated [atomization lines producing aluminum alloys](https://www.voxelmatters.com/arcway-to-bring-ato-ultrasonic-atomization-systems-to-market/) — including Scalmalloy, engineered for lightweight aerospace and automotive parts — titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V, nickel-based superalloys including Inconel 718, Inconel 625, and Hastelloy-series materials, steel alloys, and copper alloys. 

The plant will draw on a range of atomization and powder-processing technologies, including vacuum induction gas atomization (VIGA), electrode induction gas atomization (EIGA), and plasma rotating electrode process (PREP), among others.

Powders will be produced across particle size ranges suited to laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, metal injection molding, thermal spraying, and hot isostatic pressing.

## R&D and sustainability

An on-site alloy development and rapid certification center will support prototyping, powder parameter work, material characterization, and process qualification for customers. The facility also integrates a closed-loop recycling system that converts production scrap and waste powder into certified recycled titanium and aluminum powders, with the company claiming a carbon emission reduction of over 60%.
