CIA VC firm In-Q-Tel invests in Markforged

Massachusetts-based 3D printing company Markforged has received an undisclosed investment from In-Q-Tel, Inc. (IQT), a not-for-profit investor whose mission is to support high-tech companies with cutting-edge technologies that could benefit the CIA and other U.S. government intelligence agencies.

The collaboration between Markforged and In-Q-Tel will further enable the U.S. government to adopt its industrial 3D printing platforms for the production of continuous carbon fiber and metal components.

“Markforged stands out as a leading innovator in additive manufacturing,” commented Clayton Williams, Technical Staff, Field Technologies at In-Q-Tel. “We’re excited to begin this partnership with them to further our mission to support our government partners.”

This is not the first time that Markforged has supplied its technologies for government use. The company has long had partnerships with government agencies and the defense sector. According to Markforged, certain branches of the U.S. military have hundreds of 3D printing systems in operation today.

Notably, Markforged was responsible for providing the first forward-deployed metal 3D printer to support combat operations, and now has its metal additive manufacturing system working to support operations on three continents. In the field, the U.S. military is reportedly using Markforged’s technology for a range of applications, including machinery repair, tool creation and field operations.

In addition to the investment, Markforged recently announced the release of a new metal material for its Metal X system, a high-conductivity copper. The metal joins its existing portfolio, comprising Inconel 625, 17-4 PH Stainless Steel, H13 Tool Steel, D2 Tool Steel and A2 Tool Steel.
